Making HDTV digital audio work w/analog audio

My challenge is my cable/antenna out connection from the tv appears to produces a digital signal , and may be incompatable with my external audio reception signal, my RCA RT 2760 5.1 channel home theater.

I am in the tv Cable/OTA input selection of the tv, which is the VHF/UHF IN connection ( please see specs of tv & audio device from original posting ) and my basic cable connection ( w/o a box ) feeds into the tv as well as my OTA HD Channels that come through clear. This is the routine tv Cable/OTA video input and the audio provided defaults to the lousy tv speakers .
Now in order to link the digital audio of the digital tv broadcast into the external audio device RCA RT 2760 IS the problem.
I have tried all of the standard & dopey possibilities.
Now, There is a coaxial audio connection on the tv designed for external tv audio from the tv to be delivered to that audio device. However, THAT Signal from the tv appears to be, not compatable ( probably a digital signal ) with the coaxial digital connection on the external stereo/home theater receiver.
That is where I'm at now.
How do I get home ?
I have an uneducated guess. Maybe the signal from the tv is not compatable with the RCA RT 2760 receiver.
If that seems possible....whatever idea you think is certainly worth a shot.
But, ponder this...if the signals are not compatable, will a RF Modulator or any other device convert/decode/debug/descramble that digital audio signal so that it can be properly feed through the external stereo/home theater ????

First, is the digital coax connection you are talking about a single jack color coded orange on both the TV and the RCA receiver and you are using a single cable with an RCA plug on each end?

There are a few possibilities and you haven't reported back as to whether you tried any of the previous suggestions.

1. If you have only basic cable the audio is analog and if the TV only offers a digital out you are stuck. Even some of the channels of 'digital' cable still use analog audio.

2. Did you turn off the TV's internal speakers?

3. You said previously that digital coax is only available for the DVD input on the receiver. Is there a menu setting to enable the digital input? It may default to analog.

4. If the TV has a digital out then it probably also allows you to set it to pass Dolby Digital or PCM. If the receiver does not have a built-in DD decoder, set the TV to pass PCM.

5. You imply that there is only one VHF/Cable input and yet you get both cable and OTA channels. Maybe we just have a terminology mismatch here but to get OTA channels requires an antenna and if there is only one RF input on the TV I don't see how you can get both cable and OTA unless you have some kind of splitter that you didn't mention.
