Hi guys, I have a 2 years old sony DVD player and about buying Toshiba XDE now. But I need to make my DVD players region free instead of region 1 limited. Anyone knows how to do so?

Thanks.. i highly appreciate it.

In some cases (like Oppo) it is as simple as pressing keys on your remote. What model sony is it?

Tse Sony DVD Player is DVP-NS55P and also the Toshiba XDE500.

The rules of the DVD Consortium do not allow players to be region-free but most players allow you to change the region a few times before it locks it to the one currently set.

However, that hasn't stopped progammers who work with firmware from creating patches to make a player region-free. You use them at your own risk though - doing so will void any warranty you have.

I tried to put the code in but the last digit '9' that should be on the screen does not appear. Any idea why?

Is the number appearing in the TV Screen or LCD display on the player?

It should appear on the TV screen. The instruction says use the front panel button to open the tray and after the number sequence and pressing '9' you have to use the standby button on the front panel to retract the tray. So the only time you use the remote is to punch in the number sequence. If you follow the instruction exactly it should work.

What if I use the remote all the time? It should be fine, right? The number '9' appeared on the tv screen and i assume my DVD is now region free, right?

If it did then it might be fine. The only way to know for sure is to try to play a disc that it wouldn't before, i.e. one that is for another region.
