I did something really stupid and I hope I didn't damage my sub. I pulled out my sub cable with the power on, sub at about half volume...heard a loud boom. It seems OK but just a word of advice:

make sure you power down before pulling out cables!!

Don't sweat it, Johnny. I'll wager MOST of us have done that (and worse  ) at one time or another. Most subs have amazing recuperative powers and the better ones have limiters that help protect against our many OOPSES.

Excellent advice. That's rule # 1 in this hobby.

Before kerfutzing with any connections, turn off (not just down) all power.

Now, had this been speaker cables and had they shorted, well....

I've done that a few times. Whenever I changed the location of my sub, I pulled out the cable and heard the boom. I'll learn one of these days ;) .

I think that is the caps dumping their charge. It will often happen whether you switch it off first or not.
