Major Retail Chain Interconnection Installation

Has anyone had experience with retail stores offering home theater interconnection installation service? I've just seen a horror story at my neighbors and was wondering if this is atypical.

Background - my neighbor wanted to add surround sound to the family room tv and ended up buying the speakers / equipment at a major retail chain, primarily for trust and return policy reasons. He also contracted with them to hook up the equipment, which consisted of a Yamaha 2500 receiver, a cable box, an LG DVD/VCR combo, and a d-link music server. The speaker wiring and installation was done by someone else. His understanding was that they would also supply the necessary interconnect cables. This major retail chain charged $450 for this service.

I just saw the setup, and i can't believe it. They used whatever cables were supplied in the box, and botched it.
The music server is connected to the receiver with both component video cables and a composite video cable. Neither the digital optical output or digital coax output is connected. Not even the RCA L/R audio.
The DVD player is connected to the receiver with RCA L/R audio, even though a digital audio output is available.
The cable is connected through the cable box to the VCR that cannot control an external cable box to change channels for recording.

When my neighbor called to complain, the major retail chain says its past 30 days, nothing can be done now.

How can these places get away with this? And, anyone interested in starting a business?

Major chain Installation

Sounds like par for the course with the big box stores. While the cable cost is separate from the labor, someone who`s clueless made a pretty penny. Unfortunately if you quoted someone $250 for the job, they`d probably think you were overcharging. Cèst la vie.
