Major Problems with Yamaha 5840

I bought a Yamaha 5840 from Futurshop last October. After four weeks, the unit went dead. It would power up but did not register any inputs or audio sources and did not produce any sound. I returned it to Futureshop and since it was two days past the 30-day over-the-counter exchange period, they sent it to Yamaha for repairs. Six weeks later it returned, the problem was a defective PCB and it was replaced. The unit worked fine until today.

Today I was listening to an iPod plugged into the receiver and once again it has gone dead. Same symptoms as before.

I'm very annoyed at the problems I've had with this six month old receiver and do not look forward to shipping it out for another six weeks. There's no way i'm putting up with this nonsense for the rest of the warranty period. I have looked around the internet for similar problems with this model but have found none. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice on how to deal with this? I'm thinking about ditching this unit when it comes back and getting something from another manufacturer (any suggestions?) Has anyone else had problems with Yamaha?

Have you checked to see if there is a closer authorized repair center? It might cut down on the amount of time that your receiver is away.

Yamaha problems

Sounds like your receiver is a lemon or that you are overdriving it. You have an entry level model so don't expenct it to drive inefficient 4 ohm speakers to reference levels. Also make sure that it has adequate ventalation.

I would take advantage of the issue and get a credit towards an upgrade to a HTR-5860 or maybe a refurbished RX-V2500. Otherwise, in a few months, when it dies the third time you will be SOL.

Its usually in the -30 to -20 range, never higher than -20 as I live in a condo. The receiver is hooked up to a pair of JBL E80s in the front and a pair of Energy C50s in the rear, all 8 ohm speakers.

I'm off to see Yamaha tomorrow, we'll see what they say.

Would a Pioneer VSX-1015TX 7.1 count as entry level also?

Or is that mid-level?

And what's high-level? $600+?

Doc,
The 1015 is considered entry level. For receivers, generally based on initial MSRP:

Entry level < $700 < Mid level < $2200 < High level
