Hello Audioholics,
I've taken a break over the last 3-4 years from the AV scene being happy with my current setup, but coming back to the AV scene I feel like I'm no longer worthy of saying I'm even remotely close to an Audioholic. I have had a 7.2 setup in my home, but now that I'm moving to a new home and have a blank canvas to setup a new theater I'm seeing there is a new MainChannel.Sub.X denotation. From what I am piecing together, this "X" is for "high channels"?
I have a couple of questions I am unsure about:
- Is Dolby Atmos the only setup using the high channels or does DTS:X leverage these as part of their "immersive" experience?
- Should all new "X" speakers be placed in the ceiling or be tilted down towards the seating area at a higher point of the room?
- Looking at the videos on YouTube from Gene and Hugo, it looks like the crossover is no where near the quality of adding discrete speakers facing down the ceiling; if I take this approach of not using "Atmos" speakers is my setup now considered 11.2 vs 7.2.4? If not, how do you hook these "high channel" speakers up to receivers that are only 7.2?
- Is there a big difference between having 4 or 6 of these speakers? I see some outlines for the Atmos setup (http://www.audioholics.com/audio-technologies/dts-x-immersive-surround-sound), but curious if that doc holds true when having discrete speakers vs one that is using the ceiling as a reflection point?
- Looking at the back of a few receivers that are 7.2, but have the Atmos/DTS:X certification, I don't clearly understand how to wire up these additional channels, unless again it is repeating the single to the same speaker that has the crazy directional speakers.
Thanks in advance!
