Main Speakers in room corner ?

Lets say all other audio factors are equal. How would you grade the placement of main speakers in a corner (positioned equally from each wall of the corner pointing toward center of room) vs. placement from a straight wall side?

I guess what I am asking is, if given the opportunity, provided the situation allowed for it, is the corner a good spot for mains?

i cannot speak for every type of speaker from every brand, but the general answer your question is..... NO.

It is not @ all optimal to place speakers in the corners. None that I've ever used (lots) anyway. When placing speakers you almost always want to minimize early reflections. Cup your hands around your mouth and then start talking. That's essentially what's happening to a speaker when it gets placed in a corner. Not a good thing. It gets boomy and is not true to the source.

Unless designed specifically for in-corner placement like this: http://triadspeakers.com/products/icso.html

Now, a loudspeaker and a subwoofer are two different stories. Some subwoofers will benefit from being placed in a corner and some won't. Some are even designed specifically for the purpose of corner placement. Usually it depends on your room more than anything.
