Main Freestanding + In wall Surround?

Hi All,
I currently have B&W CM9 for my mains B&W Cm Centre2 for my Center channel.....
I would like to set up a 7.1 surround but was thinking of using in-wall's for both side surrounds and back surrounds.

My questions are
What would match up with those speakers the best?
What does everyone think of using in-wall surrounds plus freestanding speakers?

Thanks
Brian

This is a common thing to do and the same principles should apply to installing these as the in-ceilings you were asking about in your other thread.

Without detailed info/pics of your room it's impossible for anyone to say one way or the other if it's best for you. Walls provide more challenges than ceilings when it comes to placement and lining things up correctly. Could you do in-walls? Sure. Should you? Not sure. But that has nothing to do with sound quality and everything to do with layout & installation.

Ideally you would voice match the fronts & rears with something in the same model line as your mains. This allows for the most seamless transitions from front to back. Placement of your sides &/or rears determines what type of speaker you will use. Meaning: Di/Bi/Mono-pole.

Hope this helps!

IS there anything against using different size surrounds? So, for a 7.1 set up, does the back surrounds have to be the same as the side surrounds?

No, they don't have to be. However, if you listen at loud, reference level volumes and use an 8" on the sides and a smaller woofer in the ceiling (or viceversa) you could run into some problems. Other factors can maks this work fine or work terribly. Whenever possible, match driver size and materials. That will give you the closest voicing possible at all volumes.
