Magnetically Shielded

I have a pair of JBL E 100'S . The spec's don't say if they are magnetically shielded . What exactly is a magnetically shielded speaker and is it important to have this. My main fronts are sitting next to my tv about 3' on either side. Should I upgrade to a speaker that is shielded?
Thanks

3' ... feet? unless thats some ultra electromagnetic speaker ... that would be fine.

im guessing you mean inches. no mention in the manual about shielding?
im guessing they are shielded. and mule is right, no discoloration on the tv means, its not affecting the tv

I mean my speakers are situated 3' to the left and 3 ' to the right of the TV.

No mention in the speaker spec's about shielding, Although I'm looking at another pair of JBL'S, called the Studio series L 890, and it states shielding there.

The rule of thumb to live by with unshielded speakers is 3 times the distance from the driver as per the driver's size. So if the driver is 12", it needs to be 3 feet from the tv. 6" driver needs to be 18" from the tv. Etc.

But I think your speakers are shielded.

Hi rjbudz,

Does it matter if the tv is in a cabinet? I have 12" unsheilded woofers about 6"-8" from my tv but the cabinet is 1/2" mdf.

The only two problems i have had is once my wife moved the speaker in front of the tv while cleaning and my tube discolored for about a day and I had some heavy bass drum rock up real loud on two channel no sub and the picture was flickering. The whole 36" picture was blinking! (don't do that anymore)

Thanks,

Hi backatcha.

No, the mdf will not protect you from interference. Most speaker cabinets are mdf and offer no protection, either. How do you get such big drivers so close to the tv? Is the tv very low, or are the speakers on a stand/cabinet? You can get away with having the drivers two times the distance from the tv as their size...but I'd guess you're having a tad of disturbance on your video right now.

The flickering is your tv's way of telling you it likes its rock and roll more subdued, lol. If it's possible to do, I'd suggest you move the speakers a bit further away from the television.

I used to have one of my old Advent's right up against the TV with no ill effects. I have since moved it to a more acoustically sound position but the unshielded speakers didn't seem to affect my TV at all.

Jeffvee, magnetic fields only affect CRT's. If you are using a RPTV then you have nothing to worry about. If you are using a CRT and having no problems, you still have nothing to worry about. :)

Backatcha backatcha,

That would make sense since the speakers are mdf. Duh!

The tv is about 15" off the floor and so the 12" drivers are right there. I do set the speakers to small most of the time when the tv is on and pushing 5 channels but not all the time and I have not seen any interferance.

Lucky or to oblivious to take notice?

I say put your mains as far apart as you can with your given room.

You should also not put unsheilded speakers near dvd players (found out the hard way;) )

My computer sub is 22inches away from my monitor and its an 8 inch, and when I play sine waves at high volume the monitor flickers.

It doesn't depend on the driver size, its the magnet size. A 12inch driver can have a 12inch magnet, or a 3 inch one.

take that RJBudz! ;)

My DVD player is right next to an unshielded speaker. What is the supposed problem?

When I had a subwoofer in a cabinet and then the dvd player on the other side, the dvd started skipping during bass heavy scenes.

The more power sent to the driver, the bigger the magnetic wave.

Could also be viration. Though my subwoofer is also within three feet of my DVD player and I have no problems. See THIS picture. The DVD player is right on top of the turntable.
