Magnetically shielded speakers for rear projection crt?

I'm about to purchase a pair of bookshelf speakers. I will place them on top of my rear projection crt tv. The people I've asked have said that there is really no worry if the tv is a rear projection crt. Should I still get the shielded version?

Yes, you should get the shielded versions if possible.

My understanding is that the speaker magnets are only a concern within a certain distance from the cathode ray tube (two feet sounds familiar). Your rear projection TV probably has the CRTs near the bottom, and you said you want to put the speakers on the top. That's probably far enough away to not need shielding, but if it doesn't cost much more to get the shielding then get it.

The TV is 53" tall. I'm not sure how close to the bottom the tubes are or how long they are, but with the speakers on top, I think they are ~34"-36" away from the tubes. The speakers would probably be closer to the tubes if they were on stands and next to the TV.
