Magnetic shielding on subs

Is it very important to have magnetic shielding on a sub? If a sub does not have magnetic shielding do you have to keep it far away from the TV and any other electronics such as your receiver, DVD player etc?

I was planning to pick up a BIC sub (im in an apartment so I cant get the big whammy yet) but the place I intend to put it is very close, actually right next to the TV and electronics. When I looked at the specs online it says: Magnetic shielding: NO.

Thanks

You should be just fine. Its when the magnet is right next to the display that you can have a problem. As long as the sub is setting on the floor, you'll be good.

ok great. I dont have a CRT tv. I was just mainly concerned with having it too close to the new pioneer elite I just bought and having it tweak something in it. The spouse was also asking if we could use the sub as a table for the components next to the tv but I dont think I will try that.

Thanks

It depends on the TV, If it's a CRT keep the sub away from it, LCD and Plasma don't suffer from magnetic interference.

I guess a better question to ask would be is magnetic shielding on a sub only important if you have a CRT TV? I would think it would have effect on other components. I only question this because I used to be into car audio when I was younger and some of those magnets were so huge and powerful if they touched something metal you needed some serious strength to pry it off.

You have no worry!

If you want to really see where you need magnetic shielding go to a Chemical Plant that makes Chlorine. The make it from bine ( slat water, NaCl) and use sevral millions or dollars worth of eletricity each month. You have to take off anything remotely magentic, credit card stripes, watche, cell phones. It is several magnitudes stronger than what you are worrying about.

Is will affect the electron beam in a Cathode Ray Tube as previously mentioned, and personally I would not put my billfold or credits cards on top of it, but any newer TV it will not affect !

Cool. Thanks. I just figured I would ask the pros before I set a sub next to my audio/video components and have everything take a dump on me after a few weeks.

Edit: I asked a popular distributor about placement of non shielded subs and they said 2-3 feet away from electronic components.
