Hello,

I have just bought a set of Totem Forests paired with the Pioneer Elite SC 27 receiver.

The sc 27 pushed out 140 watts RMS per channel. Everything sounds great! I love my Totems so much.

My question is:

By adding the Macintosh MC 252 amp to run my mains for stereo music, do you think that it will drastically enhance the sound? I know that explosions in movies will pack more punch, but I am concerned more with an increase in music quality with such a high performance power amp.

I am also asking this because I know that if my speakers were paired with a Macintosh integrated amp.... the music difference compared to what I have now would be night and day.

Thanks!

I think it will depend on your listening preferences. The Mac will last a life time and is a good piece of gear. If you concerned about music only take one home , as most dealers have no issues with that, and see for yourself. As for quality thats highly debatable. On the scope the Mac will have better overall distortion numbers, but audibility is an issue. I have a 250wpc mac that i wouldnt trade for the world, but the pioneer 82 that preamps it sounds pretty damn good.

Can I ask what you mean by saying that the mac will have better distortion numbers but audibly is an issue means?

It sounds like we have a similar type of setup... but I don't have the mac.

on paper the Macs numbers will look better, but hearing that difference is another story. If you have the money for the Mac, IMHO, pick it up its a nice investment. If you listen to a lot of classical, jazz, ect it will provide a nice punch for those transient peaks. Just remember that most of us listen to music @ around 25 watts for critical sessions, its the peaks (dynamics) that make the difference in the aforementioned genres.

Seriously, I have no life.
If you compare that amp or anything with a hefty power supply like it has with a receiver, you'll hear a difference. That amp is like a truck that can pull stumps and a receiver is more like a sportier car- it has the power but not brute force.
