macbookpro dvi to hdmi no signal

Got my brand new sony kdl52w4100 and was hoping that a dvi to hdmi would allow me to view video on the tv. everything I read says hook it up, mbp will sense the settings. All I get is a flicker on the mbp, quick screen to black on the tv and then the message no signal detected.
any ideas, settings, switches or other ideas.

Well it might not. If the TV needs a two way connection, to keep recertifying HDMI then you will have a problem.
