Generally, no.
The boutique brands, including Runco, Sim2, Digital Projection, and Projection Design are all extremely overpriced for low yield product which is more tweaky and expensive to maintain while delivering very similar quality to major manufacturers.
As far as I can tell, this is really about production. Epson will sell hundreds of thousands of projectors, while DP will sell a couple ten thousands (maybe). So, DP has far higher costs to maintain their line without having the budget to put in the same amount of research and development. Sometimes they get poor quality chipsets because they don't have the capabilities of fully testing through everything... This is common with all smaller manufacturers, not DP specifically, but in both projection, displays, and audio components - the bigger names have a certain advantage that is usually beneficial to their projectors.
This DP model:
Digital Projection Projectors: Digital Projection M-Vision Cine 230-HC 1.56-1.86 lens DLP projector
...is pushing out about 1,000 lumens which means it can't extend beyond a standard 80" to 120" diagonal screen and puts it smack dab in the middle of the other projectors on the market which look very good for the money.
Most notably is the JVC RS Series which likely deliver better black levels and tremendous image pop due to great contrast ratios (native). The RS45 is around $3,000 and I would expect it to look about 95% of the M230 in terms of overall image quality... if not more.
JVC Projectors: JVC DLA-RS45E D-ILA projector
If you are talking to a company recommending DP for a standard theater installation, then I would strongly recommend that you put that money into other things... Better speakers, a great subwoofer, or external amplification.
Also, don't get suckered into a Stewart screen or $200 HDMI cables!
Really, if you were in the DC area, I would ask that you call me to get things taken care of for a far more realistic system.
