What is the verdict on these speakers?

Are they a glorified Bose?

I'm impressed with the 10yr transferrable warranty.

Apparently they don't advertise...I think thats cool too.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

Thx

M&K, or Miller & Kreisel make some very impressive speakers. They have been around for a long time and have a good rep. I think lately, they have shifted a bit more toward HT but many still find there speakers to be great for 2 channel. I have not listened to them in while.

Bose, they are not! They are on the opposite end of the spectrum in all aspects.

M&K makes some of the highest quality speakers available anywhere. There is really not much more to say than that.

I am a big fan of M&K. I have 2 systems. One system is using the consumer products they have and one is using the Pro system. Like most of the people that replied I say they make excellent speakers. You don't see them in your regular electronics store is because they target the pro users like a recording studio for example. And the other reason they're not popular is the cost, it is expensive.

The only thing M&K has in common with Bose is that they both make speakers. As already said, the reason you don't hear much about M&K is because they rarely advertise in consumer media and are generally more focused towards the professional recording industry.

I just recently bought my M&K setup back in Late Novemeber and December. Actually I just picked up a second M&K MX350 subwoofer last week - my local dealer had a mint floor demo for $1250 which was too good to pass up. I currently run 3 S150's for L/C/R, and 4 SS150's for SL/SR/SBL/SBR along with the 2 MX350 subs for my THX Ultra 7.2 setup. I love it and wouldn't have anything else. For HT they are hard to beat and you'd probably have to spend alot more money to do so - as I'm sure you've heard M&K is practically the industry reference standard using by nearly every studio, Dolby, DTS, THX, etc. More movies and music are probably mastered on M&K systems than any other. Before buying my system I read a few posts indicating that they aren't as good for playing music but I have not found that to be the case. One of their strengths in accuracy and neutrality - they reproduce it the way it was recorded - and alot of people don't like to hear the defects in the recording and mastering process. Also, they are obviosuly satellite speakers intended for use with a sub and alot of stereo fans seem to prefer full range speakers so they find the satellites lacking in bass when used without a sub. Well duh....

Since getting my M&K's, I watch alot more TV and movies. I'm not sure if that's a good thing, but I'm addicted and have found myself rewatching movies I had already viewed using my previous HT sound system and have realized it's like watching the movie all over again - there's so much detail and sounds that I didn't hear with my previous system (which was decent). I can't say enough great things about M&K, and their customer service/tech support is top notch too.

What are you using to drive your speakers? receiver or separates? I'm using a 5803 to drive the pro speakers I have but I'm using it as a preamp. The speakers I have are powered (MPS-2510P). I watch a lot of movies myself, even old ones. But if you haven't tried it yet, listen to DVD-Audio or SACD what a big difference compared to other systems. I took the same source to my friends house who has a high end system in my opinion and I can hear a difference in sound reproduction. Enjoy your M&K's.

I have S150s in the front and 750s in the rear (I have SS-150s I have not hooked up yet but are sitting in the box) run through a Denon 3805. I have a Velodyne HGS-18 for the low end (because I got a deal on it, I would have NO PROBLEMS running M&K subs, they are awesome). It blows away systems that are three times the price. M&K makes a fantastic product and I would recommend it to anyone.

Truth of the matter is, I honestly don't know what I would rather have. I have heard a lot of speakers that claim superiority and charge 10k or whatever for a pair and they still don't sound as good as pair of S150s, my opinion.

As far as the comments about their ability to reproduce music...half your CDs were probably mixed using M&K monitors and most your movies... specifically the active version of the S150s... so, in short, those claims are wrong.

Both in music and in home theater, M&K rocks.

check out the "S-150 THX ULTRA System" ...you can buy that as a package from a dealer and quit worrying about buying the best for your money, cuz you'll have the best for your money. ;)

I can relate to this statement too. One movie in particular, "Requiem for a Dream" ... probably one of the more powerful movies I have seen... I rewatched it after buying the M&K gear and it somehow was far more powerful. It's hard to explain... but the way the M&K engulf you is unexplainable in both music and movies.

Plus, you got nine tweeters and six midrange drivers pointed at you in the front alone. Kinda overwhelming. ;)

Happy540i,

I'm using a Pioneer Elite 56TXi as a pre/pro with a Bryston 6B SST driving the S150 L/C/R and the reciever driving the SS150 SR/SL/SBR/SBL. Yes, I listen to SACD/DVD-A using a Pioneer Elite 59AVi. I'd have to say the same is true with high-quality audio with the M&K's, it's like hearing it for the first time again. Even though I've probably listened to it a 1000 times, when I first listened to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon on SACD it was incredible. Admitedly, Dark Side is almost like a movie soundtrack in some respects with all the sound effects, etc.

I really haven't heard any other speaker system that impressed me more than the M&K's for detail, accuracy, and neutrality, but to fully appreciate them you need good source material because the M&K's will expose any flaws in the media.

I have a pair of S100b's that are very detailed. You can't beat the vocals that these speakers can produce. You would swear that the person in the recording is in the room right in front of you if you didn't know better.

I have almost the identical system to Monty Williams except for only one subwoofer. The build quality is exceptional, the performance is awesome. Unfortunately, they do not advertise for the home market so most magazines never review them. Speaking of which, I have never seen them discussed or reviewed by audioholics.com. I find that peculiar since this manufacturer is the professional's referrence standard.
