What do you think of the M&K THX S-150 series for JOINT theater and 2-channel music use in a non-dedicated theater room? Are they geared more for dedicated HT use or do they have a good 2-channel music reputation as well? In my local dealer, they only have them installed in a dedicated HT, not in a general music listening room. My gut instinct is they were designed to be aimed more toward the HT market rather than the music market. Thoughts????

I'm not familiar with that particular M&K speaker unless it's the S-150PTHX, but I remember reading that the expensive M&K THX Ultra speakers (S-150PTHX, MX-350THX, and SS-150THX tripoles) are fine with music. Another review of some cheaper M&K speakers (K-15) said that they were less suitable for music. These reviews are available at www.homecinemachoice.com. As they are THX I would have some doubts as to their suitablity for music because of the high (80 Hz) crossover.

tbewick:

thanks. yes, its the S-150THX model i was asking about. i read a few reviews that commented on the lack of bass in music listening (w/o subwoofers). i get the distinct impression that these monsters are superb for HT, but not so superb for music.

I guess it would depend.

These are supposed to be some of the most accurate speakers out there. Whether or not you like that kind of sound is a different story.

I beleive these were designed for theater performance first, but don't quote me on it.

marshall,

A friend of mine has these speakers and they sound great with music. You will, however, want to use a sub. He uses an m&k mx-70 i believe and they blend seamlessly.

All M&K satellite speakers are designed to be used with a subwoofer. The S150THX speakers sound amazing with home theater. I have never heard them with two channel music, so I can't comment other than to say that they definately are designed for use with a sub.

The S150P-THX are the same speaker but with 2 built in amplifiers, one for the tweeters and one for the woofers. I haven't heard them personally, but have been told they sound awesome (though really pricey at $2400 ea).

I'm using the little brother to these, LCR851's and like the way they sound with music.

I've had the S-150THX (x3) SS-150THX (x2) for over 8 years and think they're great for HT. They're very directional, so, especially in their current location, they're fine for music, but if you're wandering around will sound very different than if you're just hanging out on the couch.
