M&K MX 150 THX help needed

Hello all;

I need your advise. I have had an M&K MX 150THX for 6 yrs now and it has been working perfectly. A month or so ago while away on business my wife called me and siad that our house has been struck by lightning and that she heard a big boom in the theatre room. I tested the receiver and found out that it was fried (AVR 3300) but when I connected the sub to my ipod (the only device that I could connect to) I heard sound fro both speakers (low frequency & volume but sound nonetheless) so I did not think there was a problem with it.

Long story short, I replaced the receiver and found out that the sub was not working. I am trying to find out what the issue is. I thought it could be the sub cable, replaced it but no change. I tested the 2 speakers by connecting them directly one at a time to my center speaker channel wire(Disconnected from power before that) and they both worked. My novice diagnosis is that there is an issue with the amp or perhaps the capacitors. I am thinking that since the sub signal from the receiver (Denon AVR4308CI) is pre amp, it may not be loud enough to be heard because of that. Does that make sense?

Any suggestions on what I can do to narrow down the issue and where to get parts from- if it is not too complicated to DIY. Of course M&K going under did not help at all! I live in Dallas TX so if you know of a reputable repair place that would be great too.
Thanks,
Ash

Hi there,

I'm not sure where to get parts specific for M&K now that they're gone. Indeed, I'm looking for parts as well -- I'm looking for drivers. Now that you have drivers and no amp, would you be interested in selling the drivers only?

If you're just looking for generic parts, Parts Express has plate amps that would probably work for something like that. You might have to adjust the hole in the box for it to fit. You could also buy a pro amp and use an external crossover or your receiver/pre/pro's bass management to do the low-pass filter.

If you decide to dump it and get a whole new sub, let me know about those drivers.

Thank you

Thanks for the info. I will check parts express for parts.

Can you elaborate a little on the pro amp and receiver pre/post setup?

Will definitely keep you in mind if I decide to get rid of it (although unlikely. nothing matches the deep bass)
