M&K Speakers Return As MK Brand
By Joseph Palenchar -- TWICE, 9/25/2008 1:54:00 PM

Glenview, Ill. — Miller & Kreisel (M&K) home speakers, AWOL from the U.S. market since February 2007, are back under the MK Speaker brand through The Dolpin Group, an importer/marketing company set up by principals of Abt Electronics, the consumer electronics and major appliance retailer.

In recent weeks, select MK speakers went up for sale on Abt’s online site, but the company plans distribution to brick-and-mortar retailers, probably through stocking reps and rep/distributor companies, Dolphin president Mike Abt told TWICE. The company exhibited at the recent CEDIA Expo and will go to International CES in January to close deals, he said.

Abt’s site displays 23 MK products, including satellite speakers priced up to $1,199 each, a surround speaker priced up to $1,399 and subwoofers priced to $2,199. All but six THX-certified speakers on the site can be purchased online. The THX speakers are available only by phone order for shipment to consumers, a customer-service rep said.

In late November or early December, Dolphin plans to bring a trio of in-wall speakers to market.

Dolphin imports MK products through Denmark-based MK Sound, a start-up venture that purchased M&K products and intellectual property after the founding company, 34-year-old Miller & Kreisel Sound of Chatsworth, Calif., filed Chapter 7 in early 2007. The start-up’s owners include a former overseas distributor for M&K and a former M&K sales executive based in Europe, said Abt.

The new owners moved all manufacturing to China. M&K built products at its own Chatsworth factory and in China, Abt said.

At one time, M&K had more than 300 dealers, Abt noted.

The website mentioned had bogus information about MB Quart a few years back. They had printed that MB Quart would re-enter the home audio scene as Third Acoustics. It was a bunch of BS.

Also, it may be a coincidence, but my computer crashed after visiting this site.

Economy

With the economy in trouble, more and more companies are heading to the big East (China) for manufacturing.

Mark Levinson's Red Rose Music's speakers and amps/preamps are made in China.

All of the Denon and Marantz new DVD/BD players are now made in China. All the Marantz receivers and even new pre-pro/amp combo are made in China.

Well, I haven't seen anything saying they still have any of their design staff left. Does anyone know someone who works/worked at M&K who could maybe provide us some insight as to the direction?

Has M&K really returned? Or is this a case where someone bought the right to use the name, and that the products now have no relation to the original company's designs or principles?

Nod, that's my question. I bought my sub through their support guy, Berry, but I haven't been able to find him to ask.

When I bought my S-150s, a per speaker frequency response graph came with each to show that they hand matched them. Love those speakers, and they will be setup soon. ;)

Did some browsing at Abt this weekend to ease my addiction...

Yes, one of the first items I noticed was the M&K gear. Did not get a chance to actually take a listen but the models were out on the floor and connected for demo and such. Also had a large sub on display with the push/pull config that they were known for I believe?

Someone bought the name. Ken Kreisel (the K in M&K) has nothing to do with it anymore.

I'd expect quality to decrease now...every speaker was tested before it left the factory in California when M&K was M&K. I doubt that will be happening in China.

I agree 110% you will see a decrease in quality coming from China.
