Today I was helping my 80 year old grandfather build a fence. I saw a DVD player in his garage and asked if he was using it. He had bought a new TV with one built in so I took the old one, hoping to use it in my bedroom.

Afterwards, I stopped by Safeway where they were having a "Grand Reopening Sale", even though they never closed, only remodeled. They had some killer deals on Wheat Thins and soda though. When I checked out I was informed that I had won a DVD player. Cool, I thought, I could give it to my parents for their bedroom.

When I got home I discovered that my dad had gone to Safeway too. He had also won a DVD player. :D

The prize players are CyberHome CH-DVD 300's. They are the little mini one's you'd find at Wal-Mart. I must say that I am impressed with them for what they are. To start, they were very well packed and the manual is very clear and well written. They are even progressive scan!

These players won't win any picture quality contests but for use in a bedroom they are great. What really impressed me is that they seem to read ANYTHING. I have a few CDs and DVDs with random video clips that use odd codecs. They were able to read everything! The Aiwa DVD player, which cost nearly $300 in 2001 won't read squat. The CyberHome players are also very quick. Now, this is in comparison to my Aiwa player which appears to be extremely slow, but the CyberHome's load discs and respond very quickly. The remotes are absolutely terrible with all buttons being the same size/shape, and lined up in even rows.

The player my grandpa gave me turned out to be dead but the CyberHome is probably better than that one anyway.

I'm not telling everyone to go out and buy a CyberHome mini DVD player because they're the best ever, they aren't. I was simply impressed with the company and the product for such a low price (free for me, $30 retail).

HiHo,

I bought one of these players for my kids rec room, lasted about six months. Went ahead and bought another, its been working over a year now.

By the way, you ought to go play the lottery. Now.

A buddy of mine has one for his kids too and he's quite happy with it for the price. Very cool to win 2 in one day. IMO, you and your dad should both buy a lotto ticket...:)

i had a cyberhome too before - amazing how they can manufacture something for so, so cheap and yet, perform as well.

I still have my Apex DVD changer from a long while back.. its a 3-DVD changer for $120.. sounds expensive now, but consider that this was like 7 years ago. Still works like a charm!

Wallmart

Was in Wall mart last weekend and had to laugh aloud at how damned cheap DVD drives are these days. Like the original poster, I got a kick out of the list of formats that the players are able to decode and present. I mean, this sub-$50 (Cdn.), unit could decode pretty much every file format that I could ever think up a list of... for less than fifty bloody bucks!

Damn!
