Low Volume Output from Audio Receiver

Hi All...noob here, first post, so be gentle:

I have a Yamaha RX-V750 HT Receiver, which I've had no problems with since purchasing it several years back. However, after recently moving to a new place and reconnecting the system, I've found that the volume output that I seem to be able to get out of the receiver is severely attenuated. This happens with a variety of input sources. I have to crank the volume way beyond what I needed to do prior to moving in order to achieve even moderate sound levels. The system is in a smaller space than it was before so if anything I would have expected the opposite, more perceived output at the same volume setting, not less. Nothing has changed other than the move (same speaker setup (5.1 Cambridge Soundworks satellites and powered subwoofer), same components, etc.)

I've checked the speaker wiring and everything seems to be connected properly. I've also looked through the various settings and can't find anything in terms of how the receiver is currently configured that would explain this.

Anyone have any ideas on things I might check? Right now I have to turn the thing up so high that I'm afraid that prolonged use might damage it, if in fact something is wrong...

Thanks

Well first off I wouldn't be worried about damaging any of your components through having to turn the volume up unless the receiver is getting very hot from extended use.

As to what could be causing the problem there are a few I can think of:

1) The room is smaller, but is there the same amount of furniture in it or more? The furniture could be fairly absorptive and make the speakers seem quieter thus requiring more power to play loudly.

2) Have you tried moving the speakers around? Perhaps you have them placed in the room so they are reacting with the room modes and certain frequencies are being nullified thus causing certain frequencies to be drowned out. This could be solved by a mix of speaker/seating placement (all three room axis) and proper room treatments.

3) Have you re-calibrated the distances and sound levels of each speaker for the new room? This could affect loudness and should be done even if it won't fix your problems.

Hope this helps!

It's entirely possible that you've accidentally engaged the "Night" mode on your set...with the remote, perhaps, during the move/new setup. Check to make certain that this mode is "OFF". It's also possible that you need to run YPAO or reset your speaker level settings in the receiver. So check them and let us know if one of those suggestions helps.
