Low notes around the house

My main system is in the living room with the TV. The living room is about 18ft x 12ft (ish, never really measured) with sub in the front left corner of the room under an end table next to a couch. Entrance to room is back left and is 6ft wide, 7ft high arch leading to stairs up to main level of house.

I've noticed that I can hear the low notes of music and effects more clearly upstairs that has line of sight into the room than I can in the living room. Music and movies sound great in the living room but seems to blend more. Low notes (bass rhythm etc) just seems more articulate upstairs.

Do I need to move the sub somewhere else in the room? I'll probably experiment this weekend.

Thanks guys

That's because the low notes need that length to fully set up. A 30Hz wave is longer than most rooms. So when you are in the room, you are hearing only fractions of the wave as it reflects off the walls of that room - this is why square rooms are not good for bass.

Hmm thought it might be something like that.

Thanks j

I get really nice, clean bass at the sink in my kitchen which is down the hall and about 30ft away :) It is as clean as if I were right next to the sub, but only in that one corner. In my old place, my bedroom was at the end of the hall and bass was good in there as well, but in the hallway it was absolutely crushing.

Hmmm... I'm thinking of moving my sub to the far bathroom now......
