So I was browsing the magazines at the doctors office today, and every title they had mentioned new research that came to the conclusion that low-fat diets (en vouge for nearly 75 years) didn't significantly reduce the risks of a number of diseases, and basically everything youve ever read was wrong. (Just google "low fat", there are alot of websites covering the story).

Oh my..... I think I need to buy a cheesecake. And a large pizza, some buffalo wings, and some tenderloin steaks w/ bleu cheese injected directly into the middle of them.

I'm gonna gain so much weight this summer....... :D I haven't been this excited about a grocery store since the Atkin's fad ended.

I've never worried about fat. I cut down a bit on soda last summer and lost nearly 30 pounds. I still drink Coke, though not as much, and I haven't gained any of that weight back. I don't exactly eat healthy. :)

Argh, Low anything diets are wrong. Every person reacts differently to different foods, and you need to BALANCE your diet with EXERCISE. You can't EAT fat off.

There's a lot of evidence that low fat is bad, including if you get too low begins to affect brain function. I did a lot of research on diets and affect on the body and came to the conclusion that grandma was right, eat a balance diet. The one major thing I avoid is any thing with processed or high carbs. While Atkins fad was overzealous, the basic concept is good for the body. The one thing I'm absolutely adament about, Cholesterol lowering medication is really bad for the body, and should be removed from the market. My Uncle just called last week. In spite of my warning him to stop taking the statin, said his Dr advised that he needed it. After a few years of taking it, it almost killed him. He's still in the hospital, and the D* dr is telling him they are going to try another statin. At least he's finally doing some reading now!

Here's a really good series on fats

Yeah, I think people hear "low fat" and think it's the cure. Sheep's right, you gotta balance it with exercise. And now studies are showing that you need some fat, as mentioned above, for brain activity. However, as in the above quote, not watching your fat content often leads to you eating a lot of other things, besides fat, that are bad for you; cheesecake = cholesterol and lots of sugar: large pizza = cholesterol, tons of sodium: buffalo wings = sodium, cholesterol...etc, etc. You see what I'm saying; watching your fat intake also helps curb the intake of other harmful things, so it can have its benefits.

I don't know about the Atkins thing...seems like you get the green light to put a lot of bad things in your body so long as they don't have any carbs in them. My fiancee went on South Beach for a while and for the first two weeks (I think), you could have absolutely no sugar...and that included fruit. I don't know, but I don't know many docs that would agree that you should give up eating fruit. I could be wrong, but seemed weird to me. I just watch what I eat, try to avoid high fructose corn syrup, which is harder than you think...look around, it's in everything. And, I make sure I'm at the gym at a minimum of 3 times a week, and 4-5 times on a good week. I'm currently training for my 3rd marathon and am up to 25-30 miles of running per week/45-50 minutes per day (except on my long run day). Hopefully, someday when I'm 75, I'll look back and thank myself.

Doctors can't sell you a holistic cure for $15/day.

I'm beggining to think Cholesterol is also controlled by body thetins.

Nor get their monthly allotment of kickback from the pharmaceutical companies. My old Dr's staff complained about how much graft he accepted. His office manager even questioned his ability to properly Dr with all the influence. My new Dr works for a medical center, and they have a firm policy that the Dr's do not meet with or receive any "gifts" from drug reps. My Dr actually loves the policy, said it forces him to be more proactive in learning, and now seldom prescribes statins.

I said this before and took a lot of heat, including a red chicklet :), but actually reading the medical studies was eye opening to me. If I were to present justification data the same way the drug companies do, I'd be fired and spend the next 100 years on the witness stand as my employer reacted to millions of lawsuits.

The main problem with typical "low fat" diets is that people still eat too many calories, and eat too much junk. Eating a bunch of "low fat" cookies is no way to be healthy. If you wanted a good low fat diet, try some advice by Dr. Dean Ornish, who has come up with a diet that is very good for the heart. And, of course, "low fat" is not the same as "no fat".

"low fat" generally means "high sugar," or in the case of the US, "high high fructose corn syrup."

Low fat generally equates to lots of soda, lots of simple carbs like white bread and pasta, and lots of excess body fat... and the excess body fat is what is linked to diseases and health issues.

Low CALORIES, BALANCED DIET means health. Lowering fat intake while dramatically increasing simple carbohydrate intake does nothing good for you at all.

It doesn't take a doctor to "come up with a diet" that's good for you. Don't eat **** and don't eat more calories than you need to. Fruits, veggies, whole grains, fish, lean meats, lean dairy. It's not hard and we've known this for 75 years.

Indeed, there is a very simple formula for loosing weight. No magic food or forbidden food need be worried about.

Ok hold on to your hat because I am going to reveal the real deal...

Eat less and exersize more!

Simple but yet way too obvious for the general public to grasp.

BTW I have lost >25 pounds since January using this formula.

I lost 30 pounds in the summer of 2004 with an amazing diet.

I've managed to *stay* (gasp) healthy and in shape with it.

This marvelous diet is GUARANTEED to work, and I'm not even a doctor!

It's called the EBAE diet!

EAT BETTER AND EXERCISE!

Amazing.
