Hello everyone,

I had made a post in the diy section without any response .I am looking to make three speakers left , right , and center channles .I have a Sunfire processor and an Adcom GFA_7700 amplifier .I have built a mini monitor kit and would like to try making the entire speaker. I am looking for suggestions on drivers ,box design , would like a mini tower (36 inches high) and crossover design .I have built a crossover but not from scratch .Has anyone done a set that they feel would be good for a first set ? I have good wood working skills and a good area to bulid in .Thanks in advance ,Ron.

Its very difficult to recommend drivers when no relative performance or cost objectives have been given. I'd suggest browsing the part$expre$$ project website as well as madisound's. Also see diyaudio.com for reviews on specific drivers.

When I built mine, my goal was the most neutral sound possible within my budget. So, I chose drivers based on max price, freq response graphs, and reviews.

The drivers you select will also heavily depend on your application. 2way, 3way, floorstanding or bookshelf...?

What is your price range?

I'd take a look at the Adire Audio Kit261 towers or the GR Research A/V-3.

speaker budget

As for the project ,it can take a little time ,my speakers now are okay but would like a small tower maybe a 3-way system .As for budget I would like to keep it between $500.00 and $800.00 .I have looked at the ones that jgarcia recommended ,but they mey be out of my budget if I recall . I will check out the other post and check out their projects and links .thanks all . I am in the very beginning phase of this so just looking for suggestions ,I have a lot more reading to do ,don't completely understand the design of the crossover and all the speaker parameters ie. vas spl ....thanks again Ron

If you're building your own cabinets, the A/V-3 should be right in there; including purchasing their precut baffles with grilles, they would only be about $400. If you have to buy cabinets and have them shipped or have them made, that will definitley be over.

The Kit261 would probably push it even if you were building your own cabinets, I believe.

The Loudspeaker Design Cookbook just released the 7th Edition, might be worth your time to look it up, or even a 6th Ed.

Thanls j garcia ,i will check that kit out ,I am looking to make my own cabinets and I ahve been looking to buy that book ,but I have read it gets really technical ,could a person just getting started in this use the book correctly ?
I will buy the book look at the speaker kit you posted and when I do build them I will post pictures ,granted it will be a while ,just changed jobs so I need to put some more funds aside because I have a feeling if it is like any other project I have done I will be over budget . Thanks again .

The book is well written, but it IS quite technical. I find it to have a lot of useful info, though some parts I have to read a few times to get it. It reads like a college textbook, a little dry at times. It discusses the pros and cons of nearly all types of speaker building, cabinet design and tuning, crossover design, and even includes some aspects of driver design. It has sections that are quite advanced, and others that are down to earth enough for a beginner to get. I've got some other books that you practically need a math degree just to read...:) Good luck!

J Garcia,
have you built the a/v 3's ?I took your advise and downloanded the spec's for the cabinets ,I have got all the pannels cut and I am working on the braces .How in the world do you measure 40.375 inches and 41.875 inches with a tape measure and are the braces ment to be short on the inside or are they that way for air flow ? last question the close up on the back panel has a circle cut(binding post ?) and a 6.5-3.25 cut is this the port ,no tube ?thanks for the idea should be a nice set of speakers .I will get a battery for my camera and post some pictures as i go .1/21/06 thanks Ron.

While I haven't built the speakers, 1/8 of an inch is .125 inches, so 40.375 is 40 3/8" and 41.875 is 41 7/8".
