Only one thing needs to be added.  Some manufacturers provide very specific setup instructions for their loudspeakers.  There are often good reasons for the suggestions, and at the very least it doesn't hurt to try the designers instructions first.  In particular, with some planar speakers, the intended performance is dependent on following the designer's installation instructions.  You may decide to change the setup later, and experimentation with placement is almost always beneficial, but you can miss a lot by ignoring designer's instructions.  Roger Sanders asks his customers to sit in their primary listening position with a flashlight on their heads as a part of his speaker setup instructions, and failure to follow the instructions exactly can result in the owner missing much of what the speaker was designed to do.

It may not be manly to read and follow instructions, but it is never time wasted.
