Loud commercials on Yamaha RX-V659 hammer my ears!

I recently bought a HT sound system with the Yamaha RX-V659 receiver and Definitive speakers for 5.1 audio! My input source for the system is Direct Sat and DVD's.I love the system for commercial free HD programming! Ok, when watching Network programming such as CBS. The surround sound system hammers my ears with the overly loud commercials! For that reason, I usually resort to setting the Yamaha on 2 ch Stereo! Giving up the features of surround sound audio! I do know about the Mute button and Volume control !;) Is there any setting in input selection or soundfield selection on this receiver to give a more constant audio level! I think I have tried every choice ! But, sure value the experience of others ! In short, how can I set up this great receiver to listen and enjoy surround sound without the loud commercials blasting my brain! Or, is this a function of Dolby Digital and dynamic sound !!!! With nothing to be done! Thanks Dan !

Nothing can be done really. That's the way the networks broadcast the signals.

This bugs me too, on any receiver. This crap is supposed to be illegal, but they have some way of getting around that obviously.

If it really bothers you, set the receiver to night mode.

I have the same receiver, and I use the night listening mode to combat this. It really helps to level the sound out. Downfall is you don't get the dynamic range during whatever program you really want to watch...but at least you don't lose your surround sound.

I have the same problem.
It is not the receiver but the signal being sent by the station.
I live in Hillbilly haven NY and our local station, both radio and tv, must be run by the same moron. Some commercials, the local commercials, are very loud...thank God for "mute" while others are normal. Our local radio station is much worse...two commercials, one local another apparently national, running over each other at the same time...several minutes of dead air when going to a syndicated show from local programming.
I believe it is the individuals "running the boards"...ever see the monkey commercial with their laser pens, etc. Those are the same individuals running the boards in my town lol.
I was very spoiled living in the Boston area but did not realize it until moving to Hillbilly ville hehehe.

It's not unique to Yamaha. I have had Sony, Yamaha and Panasonic receivers, all of which did the same thing when TV sound was DSP'ed through DPL. Not only are commercials loud but some shows (most notoriously The Simpsons) produce nasty grit in the real channels. Switching to stereo fixes both but then all you've got is stereo.

Yea, well at least we all know there isn't anything wrong with our receivers. It is the monkeys in the control boothes that are to blame. My solution, not watching or listening to network or air broadcasting.:D

Yes, thanks ! I have a level setting on TV that works great when OTA. But normally am connected to Direct Dish with a optical cable to Yamaha AV, so am bypassed from TV audio! Good thought ! Thanks Dan

Read this article very intersting, plus there are devices out there to "control" volume disparity between programs and commercials, I don't know how effective they are.
