Loss of sound with new blu-ray

I just purchased as Sony BDPS-550 Blu-ray player. I have it connected via HDMI to my Sony XBR1 TV and via toslink to my Denon AVR-2805. Denon does not have HDMI inputs or outputs.

Since hooking up the Blu-ray and I now have to crank by Denon sound to +3 to get decent sound when watching dvd's. With my old DVD player, hooked up with the same toslink cable -8 was more than sufficient to watch movies.

Other connections are toslink from TV to Denon for listening to TV via stereo but this should not interfere with sound quality. Also have analog set-up from blu-ray to Denon for zone 2 listening. This as well should not interfere with my sound quality.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

It certainly seems you are having setup issues. Check your 550 audio setup bitstream and may need to turn off hdmi audio. You should be using no more than you have with DVDs. Also need to cehck your audio selection on the receivers.

Mine is quieter as well with my Sony S550 vs my old Samsung BDP1400. I use different connections (mc analong on the Sony vs optical on the Samsung), but the sound is significantly lower with the Sony.

I might have lied. The Prestige was quiet, but I had never watched it on my Samsung, so I can't actually compare it. I'm watching Casino Royale right now and the volume is just fine, same settings.

Why is the level indicator a problem? The limiting factor on loudness will be your amplifier power not the reading on the volume control. Just turn it up.

Decreased volume with Blu-ray

This happened to me recently when I bought my new system. Pioneer elite 94 TXH receiver and BDP-05 player. I had to change the receiver settings and put all 7 speakers to smalll because I have a powered subwoofer. I addition you have to adjust the BD players audio output to bitstream. The volume control on my pioneer is about the same level as my previous Yamaha RXV 2500. They both are supposed to output 140 W/channel. My front speakers are POLK LSI 15's and need power. I have no complaints but I am still experimenting with the amp and BD player. Try this. I hope it works.

Mirage Subwoofer, Polk 7.1 system with Lsi 15 as fronts and Fx 5 surrounds,

Directly connect the BDP-S550 to the receiver via analog connections for the best possible SQ. If you don't wish to do that, use the optical cable between the player and the receiver. Using the TV as a switching point is probably not the best plan if SQ and delay factors are important to you.
