losing video signal during bright scenes

hello all.

SETUP:
progressive DVD player connected via components to HD-ready 32" lcd monitor.

PROBLEM:
during excessive bright scened (flash explosions, etc) the monitor is quickly (less than 1 second) receiving/diplaying/losing a crappy signal. i will either look scrambled or be so bad the monitor will simply display (no usable source).

again, its ONLY during excessibely bright seens (closeup of the sun, a fade from black to all white, large flame/bright explosions, etc.) watch an action film with lots of explosions, heavy machine gun fire, etc it iwll happen say 3-4 times.

any ideas?? my thoughts are trying it via composite or s-video using NTSC vs progressive/components and see if thats an issue, and also trying different component cables.

anyone seen this before?

I have never heard of this problem before. But, no harm in trying an experiment with the other video sources to see if you have the same problem at the same location on a disc.
Also, did you calibrate your video with a test DVD such as Avia or Sound & Vision, or the 3rd one out there? Perhaps it is so far out of tune that a bright signal over drives the TV?

The EXACT same thing has been happening to me, I have an infocus X1. Switching to s-video seems to cure the problem but I prefer the video quality that component offers. Any info is needed.

Did you call the maker by chance? Is it calibrated in the component video mode?

Hey Cybermob2,
It looks like we may be the only ones in this boat, just out of curiosity. What brand of Component cables are you running? I am running the Steren brand from buy.com I wonder if an upgrade will fix this problem.

Me too, and fixed it...

I had the same problem using a component cable I home brewed from CAT5 cable to an Optoma projector.

During a movie, every explosion the picture cut out and the projector resynced. BUMMER!!! I rememeber one car commercial on HD really gave it fits. It was a white car on a white background. In 1 minute it resynced about 5 times.

In my hunt for a proper component cable that was really cheap, I ended up with a good deal on a 50' DVI cable. Using the DVI cured the problem. Yep - the 50' cable works with no sparkles.

So, I don't know if replacing the home brew cable would have fixed it or not.

If it was cable issue, I think you would have degraded picture, noise perhaps, or a loss of picture, not a white out in essence.
Has either of you called the maker or their rep on this?

I never thought that it could be a problem with my infocus x1, since I have heard about this problem from users with different projector brands or even on LCD's monitors like the o.p. has. I have yet to here the reason why it does it, but I guess that it won't hurt to call infocus and see what they suggest.

I did have the Optoma PJ replaced. The second one lost sync more then the first. Of course, that does not mean they both didn't have an issue.

I don't believe the issue is related something like an open or shorted cable which would cause a bad picture. But rather how sync information is transmitted over a component connection. The white levels approach the levels for the sync signal. The sync signal is how the projector detects that component is the active input. Once there is a bit of ringing or some other distortion the projecter gets confused about sync/picture information and goes into input hunting mode.

One way to verify this, would be to take the PJ and attach it with a short 3 foot component cable to the video source, and playback some scenes that cause the resync. If it still resyncs, try another video source. If it still resyncs after that, it is probably a PJ issue. Even if it does not resync, it could be on the edge and still be a PJ issue. But, probably not.
