Looking to upgrade my Panny rp82

I have a few questions about upgrading my DVD player. I'm currently using a Panasonic RP82, I'm happy with the picture but I'm looking for a DVI connection, DVD-A option, as good as possible CD playback, and possibly even upconverting.

Some of my other equipment. HK 435, AperionAudio 522 fronts, 422 center and surrounds, and an AperionAudio 8" APR SUB.

I'm currently playing my CDs through my RP82, is this a good option? Am I missing out on quality?

What exactly makes a high-end CD player different than just playing my CDs on my DVD player?

Now can I get all this with video upconversion? (which goes hand in hand with a DVI connection)

How is the player connected? With the optical or coax cables? Are you using the analog connections instead?

If you are using either the coax or optical connections, the DACs in your receiver are primarily responsible for the level of sound quality. If you are using the analog connections, the DACs in your Panny player are responsible for the level of sound quality. However, some transports - when connected via the optical or coax cables can also sound differently when connected to the receiver.

Now, with that being said, how serious are you aboue music? It seems like you are looking for a universal player. But, there's a school of thought that a universal player doesn't necessarily do *everything* as best that it can. For that reason alone, some people opt to keep their CD player for 2-channel audio and their DVD player for watching movies - or playing SACD/DVD-A discs, if the player permits.

This leads to the next question, what kind of budget to you have? You might consider the $200 Oppo player for DVD and pick up a good $300 - $500 player to keep as a dedicated CD player (the brands for my example are the Onix CD or NAD CD players.) However, there are many other brands out there in this price league that do pretty good.

Now, from my personal experience, you could look into the Panasonic SD-97. The player sounds pretty good with the on-board DACs playing CDs - and others really love the video quality. Keep in mind, that you can purchase this player for under $300. Then, there's also the Panny SD-77, which might be in better supply at the moment and cost less than the 97. :)

thanks for the reply. I have my dvd player connected through optical cable. As far as being serious about music, I'm just getting into the hobby. The older I get the more appreciation i'm having for jazz, blues, and instrumental music. When I put this H/K-Aperion system together I saw the potentional in music and realized how much I was missing out on.

When I demoed the the Aperion Speakers at their showroom they were using a H/K 430 with some sort of Onkyo dvd player. Caleb used it to demonstrate every type of media (DVD movie, DVD audio, CD) It sounded awesome. This even influenced me to purchase the Passive Radiator sub that sounded more natural with music and handled the lows extremely well.

I'm sure there is different variables that go into what I was hearing (room accoustics, wiring, line conditioner) but I would love to achieve that sound. The only problem is that I would also like to upgrade to a DVI output with 1080i upconversion. perhaps I will have to do as you said and live with 2 different components.

I also highly recommend the Panny S97. Picture quality better than Denon 2910 for half the price.
