looking to upgrade HTR-6180

I presently have a Yamaha HTR-6180 AVR powering a 5 channel Emotiva amplifier.
I am looking to upgrade my receiver and wondering if the investment is worth it with today's receivers?
Will I notice a big difference in sound quality?
Not sure what the pre out voltage is on this amp, new ones are 5v I believe?
I've seen some new codecs out there that could be interesting but is it worth the upgrade?
Controlling with my android phone could be cool.

Salesperson at store said I don't have to go for the most expensive AVR since the major differences are in the amp and since I am not using the amp in the AVR it is not worth getting the more expensive ones. Is this true? been looking at specs and it really doesn't seem more on more expensive ones except for wattage and maybe some more inputs.

I looked at preamps only and they are so much more expensive and sales guy said didn't know why as the features seem close to the same as a regular AVR.

Maybe someone could shed some light and ideas on this.
Don't mind investing but spending almost a grand and not noticing practically any difference is a bummer .

Honestly when I bought and connected the Emotiva amp I didn't notice much of a difference could this be because of the preout's voltage not being high enough. I am not blaming this to Emotiva amplifiers as they do have great reputation.

As for speakers I know they are good they are home made speakers but are awesome and probably better than most in stores. They cost me $1k each to build the 2 fronts and center speaker.
they are clearwater statement speakers. sorry wasn't allowed to put link...

The Yamaha HTR-6180 is a good amp. But wondering if it is time to change.

How efficient are your speakers? The amp section in the 6180 is no slouch. I'd try using the center & surround channel pre-outs to the Emotiva and the L & R of the Yamaha for your main speakers. I have the 6180 but am using the earlier (non-HDMI RX-V version) for my main stereo setup. That RX-V659 will push my JBL L5's pretty damn well, and will easily overpower my AR M1's.
