Looking for upgrade advice for a beginner

I made the mistake many years ago of purchasing a Sony HTIB and from day one, I have regret it. No optical in, no hdmi in, etc. Quite rudimentary for the $500 spent on it.

It's been 3 years, and I have learned my lesson. I want to get rid of this pile of overpriced metal and plastic, and invest in a system I can have for many years to come.

I would like to buy a receiver now, and upgrade the speakers over time, is this advisable? $500 is what I would like to put in to a receiver. If I can, would anyone have any recommendations? I may be purchasing used, so over 500 retail is doable.

Thanks,

The Denon 2112 is well under that price as a manufacturer refurb at AC4L.com. MultEQ XT and fully networked. Quality unit.

Not enough info on your Sony HTIB to offer much advice.

Many of those come with speakers that don't play well with other receivers. Here's what to look for.

If the five speakers are either 6 or 8 ohms, you should be fine. If theyare less than that, I wouldn't use them. The new receiver might be damaged.

If the subwoofer that came with your HTIB has it's own built-in amp (hint: It will plug into a wall socket) and is fed by a RCA (phono) jack, you should be jake. If it only has two speaker leads that go to the Sony, you're SOL.

Good luck...
