Looking for update advice

Greetings everyone, I am new to posting in the forum but have been referencing the page and videos for a long time. I have an older system that I am ready to update and figured this would be a great place to get some advice. Usually I would go to a local audio place that is near me and do some checking on my own, but COVID has closed their doors for a while and I am in a hot spot, so they may be closed for a while.

Currently I am running an Onkyo TX-NR807 receiver with Boston Acoustic speakers and a 5.1 set up. I have a VRC for my center, which has always seemed a little anemic. I actually have my center turned up 8 notches so that I can hear voices clearly. On the sides I have VR2 speakers and an XB6 sub. I don't recall my rear speakers off the top of my head, but those are not a priority. The viewing area is about 26X30, and the seats are set up pretty much right in the middle.

I am going to update the speakers first and the receiver last since that makes the most sense. Looking at speakers, I know that Klipsch is highly regarded and won't break the bank. I am trying to keep the budget to a realistic number so that the other boss in the house doesn't kill me, although she is also a fan of noise so I may have some wiggle room. Several people have recommended the Klipsch 504c with the rp8000f. Looking at the specs, it doesn't seem like a huge upgrade, but there is something to be said about the advances in technology over the last decade. I also looked at the rc-64iii, but I did see several reviews about the dialogue clarity not being great all the time.

I am looking for advice on this. Should I look into larger speakers or will this be enough? I don't want to upgrade and end up just making a horizontal movement.

How far do you sit from the center speaker? That seems like a big adjustment. Home theater is 80% center channel. You definitely need to solve that part in your upgrade.

I’m about 13 feet from the center channel and it is at or slightly below ear level depending on the persons height.

FWIW sides usually refers to surrounds, rears would refer to rear surrounds in a 7.1 setup. Does seem that for the center the drivers are on the small side, altho the L/R towers seem a bit better but in that big room I'd also like larger drivers in the L/R as well....I prefer a matching set up front if I can, and don't see much to aim for on the BA site. I'm not a particular fan of Klipsch....and while a popular, large and well distributed brand, not sure that relates to respect particularly, altho I have heard nicer things about the RP series than some of their previous bookshelf/home theater offerings. I'd also think about more sub for that huge room....

Got a picture of how the center is positioned? Does seem like a big bump on the level you're applying.

A lot of us are fans of various internet direct speaker companies (I'm far away from any brick and mortar store aside from a poorly stocked (for audio at least) Best Buy and that's a 45 minute drive)....some can even offer free in home trials like SVS and RSL; speaker and subs are offered by both, too (and note that there's no acoustic reasons for the sub to be same brand as your speakers).

I gave up on BA because it seems they have been absorbed by another company and their products are currently dormant. The plan is to match up the front three brand wise and then see how things sound. Appreciate the input on the internet sites since it seems I may be giving them a try.

I attached an image of the area and it is taken at head level from where the seats are. The center is directly under the TV and the sides are on either end of the picture. You can see the center looks...tiny. I am open to brands and suggestions from anyone. This closed down COVID thing is cramping my style and I am bored...so I shop for improvements.

Upon some advice, this is the change that has been made.

Make sure that the center is up to the edge of the shelf if not a bit beyond it, and I'd angle it up a bit by the looks of it.

It is on the very edge of the shelf it is on, but I will try angling it a bit to see if that helps. In the end, it will get replaced and hopefully by something with a little muscle.

Wow, your L /R speakers seem awfully far apart and no toe-in ? I can't imagine that the soundstage hasn't collapsed. How far apart are they and how far back do you sit ?

I am about 13 feet from the center and obviously a little more from the ends. I do toe-in the sides when viewing, but certain for legged animals like to get in on the wall on the left side and always want to push the speaker over, so I straighten them when not in use. As for moving them closer to the TV, it is something I haven't thought much about, but that may be due to my focus being on the center.

First I would get rid of everything that say's Browns on it. Second, repeat steps for Indians stuff. Go Twins!

Clear that space up and move those towers more to the center so they're not so far out. Angle them a bit towards your listening position. Replace that sub with PB16 Ultra and upgrade the AVR to a new Denon. Also, if you can, replace the center channel. The one you have seems pretty small compared to the size of the room.

I won't take a dig on the Twins since they seem pretty good this year and the Vikings...well, everyone is better than the Browns.
I will take your advice and move things in. The receiver is on the to buy list at some point down the line, but I am starting with the speakers and the focus is on the center. Getting advice is why I am here.

I know you mentioned above you have a speaker budget. What might that budget be? If you don't mind saying. I'd say if you were to get around $3k (LCR) you'd be able to get some very nice speakers and plenty to choose from in that price range. Would be a pretty good upgrade from what you currently have.

Packers fan, forced to watch Viking games.... Twins should be decent, but always get disappointed at the end of the season if we play the Yankees.

Budget is actually somewhere in the 3-5k range as long as I don’t do it all at once lol! Sure I would prefer to keep it in the 3-4 range, but I have learned from buying phot equipment that sometimes you take the plunge and spend a bit more.

Packers have always been my moms team and my sister lived in GB and worked across from Lambeau Field, so she is a die hard. I am on board with the Packers, but always try to support my local teams since that is who I can see play. Let’s just hope we have sports soon!

Is this budget for All speakers, or just Mains? Is receiver included in this budget?

Receiver not included. Would prefer it covers everything speaker wise, but then I need to decide if i want to stay 5.1 or move on up to7.1. I know I can get some very nice mains if I put the budget towards those and get the others a little later on. So much to debate! The more I think the more questions I ask myself about the direction I want to go lol!

Thanks. This is why I posted. A lot of options out there and a lot of reading and comparing to do. I don’t have money to burn (and probably shouldn’t be spending the way the world seems at the moment) so I want to make an informed choice.

And what would recommendations be without something from SVS

You can get your Sub here too. One of the Best. In fact you could add an SVS sub to any of systems you choose
