Looking for some help on subs

I just moved into a new house. The family room is 22x20x9 open to the kitchen. I am looking for a sub that can hit tight, low bass for movies, and want it to be musical too. I have a sensitive ear, and hate muddy bass. I don't mind paying for a good sub. I think it better to buy a better piece once, than buying twice.
Thank you for any help you can give.

I'm not sure what your budget is, but if you need clean bass, look to the Velodyne HGS and DD series, as well as the Martin Logan subs.

(IMO)For the sound you want, a sealed unit is what you need. It's gonna cost for the sound you are describing in a room that size. Some bass traps will be needed for sure. What's the budget?

I had to go with a ported design. It was just tooooo expensive to get a sealed unit with enough power to fill my room. I set my crossover @60, and get a good bit of quality punch from my towers. It took a lot of work with my sub, but I am pleased. Lots of tips from members and Audioholics.

...and a room the size of yours I'd look for a pair.

Axiom EP500. A fair number of reviews on it, including this site.

I have an awkwardly shaped room and invested in the B&W ASW650. I however am biased, being of the opinion that B&W still make the best speakers for sound quality. I am always more concerned about musical quality and detail. B&W delivers on all counts. The Eagles' "Hell Freezes over" DVD has never sounded so good. I was even able to pick up nuances I hadn't heard before. My musical preferences range from opera, classical, blues, jazz, folk and a little rock (but not heavy). From what I've read, it's not so much whether you buy one or 2 subwoofers, it's more about placement.

I didn't have a big budget to blow, so this is what I have:

S/W B&W ASW650 (Crossover 80**)
B&W 602S3 front
LCR600 S3 centre
B&W610i (rear surrounds)*
Denon3805
Denon 2910
Marantz CD63MkII

*If you know B&W, you've guessed it - I've been a fan for a long time. In fact, it's been a 20+ year romance. I do the bi-wiring thing and am convinced you get better sound clarity. I'm waiting to win the lottery, then it's the Nautilus range.

** I experimented with Crossover 60 but I just didn't have to the time necessary to fiddle about, so I reset it to 80.
