So just got this home audio system for free and trying to hook it up to my tv.
Need some help hooking it up correctly.

My tv has a headphone output and digtal audio(coaxial) plugs. That's it for out put.

The back of my audio receiver is limited on input selections.

It has RCA input spots and a singal digtal audio input.

What do I need to do guys?

Currently I have RCA/aux cable between the receiver and tv(audio from headphone jack going out to the RCA ports on the receiver) it works fine for now but only the front left and right speakers, plus the sub work. I would like to get it hooked up so I can have all the speakers working.

with that setup, all you'll get is two channels and maybe a sub. If you select " Dolby Pro Logic" on your audio system you may get some additional stuff from the rears, but it won't be true multi-channel.

Now, if you can figure out how to get that digital audio output/input stuff to work, you might have a fighting chance. You don't really give us too much else to go on here.

I was going to post pictures of all the plugs on my tv but I can't until I reach ten posts on the forum.

Just to be clear, your TV has coaxial digital out and your receiver has digital input, but it's optical and not coax??
Am I reading your post correctly?

So, you definitely should use digital coax. Like Mark said- you may not get true surround sound out of this setup (but who knows - some TVs support Dolby Digital 5.1 out)
Finding right cable shouldn't be problem - any shielded RCA cable should do.

This way you'll have guaranteed best quality audio, regardless of is it true 5.1 or not

I believe TVs will send 5.1 from their digital coax connectors for programming coming in from the antenna, but not for anything connected to its analog or digital inputs. So as long as you aren’t using a cable or satellite box you should be able to get 5.1 programming from the TV. Of course, this assumes that the show you’re watching is delivered in 5.1. In addition, you may have to set the audio system’s receiver for 5.1 also.
