What speakers do you have?
As long as they don't require an inordinate amount of power, I'd recommend either of these:

https://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/intdtr204/integra-dtr-20.4-5.2-ch-x-80-watts-networking-a/v-receiver/1.html

Note that these are refurbished AVR's. Many of us (myself included) have had excellent experience buying from Accessories4less.

I know you don't need the extra channels, but the economies of production scale makes these AVR's price competitive with stereo receivers, and once you add your need for HDMI/SPDIF, I think that rules out the typical budget stereo receiver!
On a positive, these will give you the excellent bass management (integrating your sub) of allowing your AVR to manage the crossover for both the sub and your mains.

Note: avoid Yamaha in this price range. Although they have a reputation for quality and reliability, they have started cutting more corners in their budget AVR's such that I cannot recommend them.

What speakers? What subs?

If all you have are 2 little speakers and a sub in a moderate size room, chances are you won’t need much power and basically any AVR will do just fine. If all you need is simply AVR, then features isn’t a factor.

So it comes down to price and reliability.

What are some choices you’ve been thinking?
