Hey everyone,
I'm looking to buy a receiver and surround speakers. I'm mostly a music fan, i like to listen to rock, experimental rock, ambient. So lets say i go from Pink Floyd, Sigur Ros, Album Leaf. Apologies if people dont know the last 2, just giving an idea. I dont really do much home theater, but i'm looking to get into higher definition/multi channel music listening, so SACD and DVDA. I also want vinyl capability at a later point. So i basically need a AV Reciever and a 5.1 setup with a sub for between 1500 to 2500. Just a big gap because i dont know if 1500 is too little to get something that sounds excellent. Thanks in advance.

I would say the AV123 with the MTM towers, and the Ascend system would be the best systems for Rock. Add a good subwoofer. :D

I own the T45, one model back of the Image B15, C60, and subsonic5i. Similar to you, I use my setup for music and HT and I'm very happy with them.

Would AV123 sell their towers as an individual item (i.e. Center Speaker), instead of a pair?

For SACD/DVD-A, wouldn't it be ideal to get 5 AV123 towers + a great Sub?

Not an expert on Receivers, Amps, etc. But, do know a good thing when I hear it. I did audition PSB's T45 and T55 with a C40 center and B15's as surround. These speakers sounded great. A company in Chicago (Saturday Audio) has an excellent deal on them, the catch is that they are Maple; other colors you can buy from your local dealer at the same price. T45 with C40 and B15 is around $850.00, upgrade to T55 towers for about $120.00 more.

For your receiver or amp, you can check a Factory Refurbished Unit. Marantz, Denon, and Onkyo are good refurbished choices. You can buy a Marantz SR5001 for around $395.00, so is Denon's 887/2307 (both are the same, but the 2307 has RS232), and Onkyo's 605 is about the same price. There are three or four reliable internet sellers for refurbished equipment; all of them certified factory dealers (E-Cost, Accessories4less, Second Act, Dakmart). All good choices. From there you can go higher, and also consider an Emotiva Amp/Processor package which have good reviews, and other models from the above mentioned manufacturers.

For CD and DVD, you can buy a good Marantz or Denon unit, which upconverts to 1080i, plays SACD and DVD-A. At this time of year many dealers are getting rid of discontinued items brand new in box, or demo equipment, and have great deals. For example, purchased a Marantz DV-6600 player from my local Marantz dealer for $250.00 brand new in box. You can also go the refurbished route with this.

My experience with refurbished items has been great, but have only purchased from internet dealers recognized by the factory in their websites. Just go the Where To Buy area in the manufacturers website, and it will tell you which e-retailers are official dealers.

$395.00 + $900.00 + $250.00 = $1545.00 Nice price for a good sounding system.
