Looking for equipment for this room layout

Just picked up my new Samsung 58B560 Plasma and will be looking to add some type of surround sound. I'm a n00b when it comes to understanding the audio aspect but I do know wiring fairly well. The budget I have is $500 so I know that's pretty low.

I added in the layout of the room in hopes that someone with far more knowledge than myself can point me in the right direction to achieving the best sound that I can afford for now.

I'm open to buying used equipment and also HTIB which I know many people don't think highly of. Any help would be great! THANKS

by the way, the floor is wood and there are windows along the right wall as well as the back wall going down the stairs. The ceiling is 9' high and the walls are pretty bare. Thanks
