for years my focus was on visuals enjoyments and ignored importance of sound completely. maybe was because i never had chance to listen to a decent pair of speakers.

for the past decade, my family have had these bose 701 hook up to yamaha rx-v990. we used it for karaoke and music listening, however i was never impressed by it. it was the internet introduced me to understanding that bose is really about brand name and marketing, so few years back i got myself a 5.1 setup made by logitech called Z-5500. it was developed for PC use, but as a HT system they served their purpose well. today as the my interest in music listening grow, im thinking about investing in a new setup mainly for music listening. im new to the world of sound, so i'd like to stay budget for this build, my plan is to still use my existing receiver. so far 2 posible setups i have come up with, tell me what you think, all comments are wellcomed. importantly, the purpose of this setup is for music and some karaoke.

setup 1. two polk audio monitor 60, for about $220, for sub i'll use my existing logitech sub.
. or .
setup 2. Energy take 5 a 5 speakers system plus a Polk Audio PSW10 sub for $200 total. i'll using 4 Energy speakers as front and bose 701 in rear.

plan may look weird, i'll be really happy if they work. please let me know what you gurus think of this since i dont know anything about polk m60 and energy speakers other than from review.

Gotta agree with LIE49 - for the price, the Polk 50/60's are a great value and provide crystal clear high and competent mid-range sound. They are priced well enough so you can spend alittle more on a decent sub. In the budget arena, the PSW125 from Polk is nice setup; the Starfire 10" from Chrysalis by Velodyne is a great performer for music, and I continue to hear nice things about HSU - but I'm not certain where their price-point sits.

I would suggest the Polk Monitor 60 (or Monitor 70) towers. They are full range speakers as opposed to the Energy Takes which are quite small, with limited frequency range.

The Logitech sub will be almost useless with the Monitor towers, you really need to add a decent subwoofer when your budget will allow.

a couple of suggestions
the Dayton Audio subs are very good for the price http://www.parts-express.com/wizards/searchResults.cfm?searchFilter=&srchExt=CAT&perPage=48&sortBy=3&layout=grid&page=1&srchPrice=&srchCat=620&srchMfg=301&srchPromo=&srchAttr=

I assume you are considering the Polk Monitor 60's from www.newegg.com ?

I would go with the Polks over the Energys, and save up for a decent subwoofer. If you can find a deal on some Infinity Primus P362s, I would go for those first. Look around for a good deal on those Primus speakers. Something else to keep in mind are the Behringer 2031p speakers. I think I would get those over the Polks and Energy speakers also, and they are cheaper. Don't even worry about a sub at this point is my advice. Save up for a inexpensive Outlaw Audio sub or Hsu sub or Elemental Designs sub. A good entry level sub starts at around 350 in my opinion.

polk audio ebay looks interesting, seems one could get lucky some time if he's patience enough :D

HSU Bookshelf Speakers and Behringer 2031p look very promissing, i'll look closer.

all these brands i never heard before in my life are the ones who makes the good stuff, im getting re-educated here i have to admit. thank you guys.

for music listening, does it matter how many mid range woofer there is? like polk m60 has 3 speakers while HSU and Behringer 2031p has only 1.

I don't recommend the 2031. It has been reported to not perform nearly as well as the 2030.

Added drivers are generally sound re-enforcement. They have potential problems with cancellation (there's some math involving the size of a circle inscribing all the drivers and its relationship to wavelength). The lower the frequency, the more you can get away with multiple drivers.

Welcome to AT cbphoto.

IMO the 3 brands you have already mentioned would be good choices in the 100 price range. In the end it should come down to personal preferences, if you can, try listening to some of the speakers you are considering if not the actual model at least the brand as this should give you some idea of the house sound.
Hope you find something in your budget that you like.
