Looking for bookshelf speakers to replace my FPM4s...

Guys –

I'm looking for some advice on bookshelf speakers to replace my B&W FPM4s. I originally bought them for a HT setup, but no longer own a TV (yes!) so I'm only using them for music now. I don't have a sub and the complete lack of bottom end is really getting to me.

The amp is a NAD L75/L55. The room is pretty small and oblong (about 20' x 10') and the sofa/speakers are placed opposite to each other along the shortest dimension.

I'm looking for a pair of bookshelf speakers that:

• Are flexible on placement (I'll need to place them close to or right against the wall so presumably that means sealed or front-ported design?)
• Are alive at low volumes.
• Cost less than $1,000 pair.
• Look good.

So far I've looked at the NHT Classic Three/Two (I'm happy to upgrade the amp if needed for a sealed box design)

Any other suggestions to check out?

Why not just keep the B&Ws and get a sub for them?
A Rythmik F12 for example? It'll bring the low end on your music to life much more than any sub-1000 bookshelf can.

But, since I already linked ascend acoustics, I might as well recommend their Sierra-1.

Sierra 1 and the NHT Classic threes would both be good options as stand alone bookshelves in a 2.0 system.

If you can live with the yellow cones (I personally like them) the KrK RP8 are an active (studio monitor) to look at as well. They are +/- 3db from 45hz/20khz and are front ported. This option would also leave funds available for a subwoofer as well.

Will the Sierra-1's work well in that position? I don't have a whole lot of room, so they would have to be placed around 4" away from the back wall –*I thought this wasn't enough distance for a rear-ported speaker...
