Looking for advice about subwoofers

Hey everyone,

I am from Canada, and it's difficult to find a high end subwoofer for a good price here. There is a Canadian dealer for SVS, but the prices are quite a bit higher than the US price; for instance, i'm considering the PB13 ultra, but it retails at $1900 + shipping + tax, so more like $2200.

Getting a sub shipped from the states is just too much money. Plain and simple, a nice low priced sub like the AV123 MFW15 retails for 599 USD right now, but to my door shipped with duty/brokerage fees and the difference in the dollar, the price comes out to $1200. Dual MFW15s is around $2000.

I have been looking at the SVS PB13-Ultra and the Axiom EP600 (well reviewed, cheaper than the SVS, and free shipping/only one tax), but i've also come across a company called Funky Waves. They are a Canadian company who does all sorts of custom stuff, and i'm pretty sure the owner is on this board. Has anyone heard of this company or any of their products? How does this compare with other subs?

Those measurements are very good. Depending on how much that 15.3 goes for, it might be worth getting over the other subs you mentioned. If you can get two of those for the price of one EP600 or PB13 ultra, you should jump on that.

That shipping is a killer. Have you considered buying the driver and Amp and building your own cabinet (or having a local woodworker/cabinet shop do it)?

Funky Waves sounds like a good way to go.

I suggest build based on the Audiopulse LMS or AXIS driver

I would seriously consider the Funky Waves sub. The CSS driver used is very good and his cabinet work seems to be top grade.

$1200 for the 15.3 is a very good price. The kit cost directly from CSS is $800 CDN and it would cost probably another $200 in materials plus elbow grease to build it.

It will outperform either the EP600 or the PB13.

the cost of the Funky Waves is actually a bit more than that. the sub with the 1300 watt amp and sdx15 is 1750, and with the av15, it is 1950. I can probably get either option cheaper than the ultra with shipping etc though, so you'd recommend it over the SVS? will the passive 18s make that big a difference?

That 15.2 is a really nice looking sub

I am surprised that the spl output drops above 20Hz.

What is it above 40Hz?

The advantage of the PRs is that you get a smaller box than ported with the downside being added cost. The 15.1 will give you much the same output in a bigger package, but at $400 less.

I'm surprised they only do the 15.1 as a cylinder sub.

With bass there is no replacement for displacement, and that 15" high excursion driver will have an advantage over the PB13 below 20Hz.

I missed the part about the amp being optional.

Yeah, i'm surprised about the 15.1 not being a box either. I asked him about the 15.1 and if he could make it a box, and he could, but it would bump the price up to about the same as the 15.3, so there's no real point. I'm still considering the PB13, and i'm thinking about the Seaton Submersive now too, but i'm not sure if its' sealed design will put out as well at low frequencies as the ported boxes

You wouldnt be at all let down by the submersive in the output area

The submerssive can easily get 100 db at 20hz on a groundplane open air measurement. In room it would be much higher.
