Looking for a new receiver.

It's almost move time and I'm seriously looking for a new receiver. The features I'm looking for are:

-Quality 1080p upscaling
-7.1, atleast 90 WPC
-New high def audio formats
-under 500 MSRP USD
-5 way binding posts, or spring clips large enough to handle 12 guage speaker wire.
-OPTIONAL preouts for external amp hookup.

I don't care about ipod docks, or bluetooth, or XM, or any of that other crap.

As for brand, I'm not loyal to any particular brand, however Pioneer is the only company that I've seen with what I'm looking for. I do like options though and I was hoping I could get some suggestions. I'm willing to move the price but only slightly.

P.S. PLEASE for the love of all that is holy do not link me websites that are selling your recommendation.

I'm seeing the Yamaha RX-V565 not sure about pre-outs on it, and the Onkyo 606/607 both a little over budget and I'm only seeing 1080i upconvert. I think Pioneer might be one of the only ones out there.

You can pick up a refurb Onkyo TX-SR 706 from www.clubonkyo.com. You can join for free and buy direct from Onkyo. If you register your other Onkyo gear and write a review on the gear you could get a $20 credit. That being said you could get the 706 for $530. I just bought a 805 from them in December and it worked out great. They have free shipping and no tax. This receiver should give you everything you need.

Good luck.

Shock, the very first thing you list is quality 1080p upscaling.

You ought to completely forget about this, especially at such a budget.

I would bet good money that your TV (which I have no idea what it is) will do a better job than any receiver at that price point, or even a couple hundred dollars over price point.

You can always add an outboard video processor some other day. I'm pretty certain it's over now, but AVS had a pretty sick powerbuy going on the DVDO Edge. I think like $300 off.

The Pioneer 1019 has Faroudja 1080p upscaling, I would consider that a quality upscaler.

As for my tv, I haven't purchased it yet since buying anything before my move would just be silly.

As mentioned there isnt anything in your price range that will have the upscaling your looking for. If PQ is a feature you want either the display or up the budget. Just because a receiver has a name brand chip doesnt mean that it will do the job. What is your display?

I wouldn't.

Your going to have to up the budget a lot if you want 1080p upscaling.

I think an HK 354 has what you're looking for and you can get them from HK direct on ebay.

I'm getting the feeling some people just read the first line of posts >_<

I've looked at the HK, but finding it for a decent price is proving quite difficult. I'm going to demo a 1019 at a local A/V store tomorrow side by side a RX-V1800 to see how the upscaling compares. I'll let you all know tomorrow.

Sorry, never seen any Faroudja chip do better than any quality TV can do. If you're looking into the new Sammy's, Panny plasmas, or dare I say Kuro, why bother with a receiver to scale unless you're in the Pio Z7 budget area. Or anything with a Silicon Optix.

My Reon HQV does a slightly better job than my TV. The Faroudja in the Denon 3808, not nearly the case. Just as an example.

I am looking at the new plasma's from panasonic actually. Like I said I'm going to check the upscaling of the 1019 tomorrow from standard DVD on a 42" plasma. My buddies 1900 does an excellent job on upscaling to his 52" Regza, so if it can match that or come close I would be happy with it.

If the display can natively upscale better than the receiver obviously it isn't going to be a problem. Since I do not have any display picked out, it is a problem.

I cant stress enough that avrs are not a means to better PQ, with few exceptions

I agree here 100%! Basically, junk in =junk out unless shock wants to spend some considerably more money. Very well said Scott. ;);)

Cheers,

I don't doubt the Reon does better but if you set your HD player to output 720p or 1080i to your 3808 you will still get fantastic PQ from real life materials (such as DVD movies as opposed to the Silicon Optix test materials). Conversely you can play your VCR, even SVHS, through a Reon equipped AVR, you will still get bad PQ. I could have opted for the much cheaper Onkyo or Integra but I prefer the Denon overall. I still get HQV PQ using my cheap Toshiba XDE500. The XDE does not have anything like the Reon or ABT in it but as a whole it does a good job on DVDs.
