I'm looking to replace my sub-par 2.1 speaker system with a pair of large monitors to be run by a Kenwood VR-407. Research has attracted me to the PSB Image B25's or the 2B's. I'm on a budget, so the 2B's are my first choice. Does anyone have a lead on where to purchase these? Or any suggestions for an alternative would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
SWANY

Well, if you want some bookshelves with good bass, the BIC DV-62si are a good choice. Out of the box they need a little work, but with the crossover mod (costs about $30) and a couple of other additions you can get some excellent sound out of them. Your total cost shouldn't be higher than $175.

I have 2B's and they are fantastic speakers. I don't know of anywhere, even online, stocking them with a warranty. If you are willing to go used try out Audiogon.com. Should be able to snag a pair for $200-$250, maybe less. They aren't the bassiest of speakers though. One review claimed solid output to 50 hz, but I don't think that they go that low in my room. I have them crossed at 80hz on my receiver. The extension that they do have is tight, and they don't try to go lower than they are intended so there isn't any sloppy or loose bass. B25's are pretty much the same darn speaker with rounded front edges and they say the driver's been improved. To be honest I couldn't hear much if any difference between the two speakers.

The Bics might play a little lower (I'm sure they're very close) but the PSB's are the superior speaker IMO. Ray said that there was very little dampening in the Bics, my PSB's have at least 2" of dampening all around and still go pretty low for a bookshelf. Although for the price I still think the Bics sound great. You can get them for around $100-$115 a pair plus shipping online.

Like someone said, if you want deep bass you'll need a powered sub. You should be able to pick something up that can more than do the job in most rooms for under $250.

I'd also suggest Paradigm Titans, they are pretty punchy little guys for a reasonable price.

I am very biased with regards to PSB. I think that they make a fantastic product for the price and are one of the best buys going in just about any of the price categories they compete in.

I'm a fanatical PSB fan and love their products. My entire HT speaker system is built on them. Stereophile in Dec2004 called the B25s, the best $500 bookshelf speaker out there. The 2Bs (replaced by the B25s ) should still be around for around $200 and are as Takeer says a great speaker.
