I'm putting together a Home Theater sys. for a friend and she has about $1,000.00 for a rec.. It will be driving either the Axiom Epic H/T speakers or the Aperion Itimus 5.1 H/T speakers. It should have a Phono input to accomodate a T/T.I was thinking of either a Yamaha 1600 or a Denon 3805. The rec. will probably be used 50/50 for movies and music. Any and ALL info. wil be greatly appreciated. :)

Yamaha RX-V2600 is one of the best...HDMI Upconversion and everything else you need. You can get it online for around $900 check bizrate and pricegrabber.

I have the Denon 3805 and it rocks i am very happy with it. It sounds great and the new 3806 has HDMI inputs you might look at that 1 to but you can't go wrong with the 3805.

I'd highly recommend this one:

If she wants to save a few bucks, she can go this route (scroll down):

If you are going with Axioms get this one.

Denon 3806

It can drive 4 ohm speakers. Not sure if the system you described includes the M80ti's, but even if it doesn't and she wants to upgrade ... she'll be ready.

Axiom has a great upgrade policy.

seeing as this system will be for your friend, I would steer twards companies with great costomer service (not good but great). Aperion has the best customer service of any company I've ever delt with. You might want to also consider the Outlaw audio model 1070 A/V reciever ( Outlaw runs a close second to Aperion in cust. service). This is the combo I have: aperion 633-t towers, 533-VAC center, 532-LR surounds, Outlaw LFM-1 sub, outlaw 1070 reciever. ( the outlaw sub will out perform the aperion subs and they are also cheaper). This setup is very "wife fiendly" and has sound you'll find your self listening to for hours on a daily basis. Buy the way when I called aperion to ask them about the outlaw stuff, they told me some of their employees are using outlaw components with their aperion speakers and could'nt rave enough about this combo. Call them and ask for your self, you'll be glad you did.

Yamaha, yamaha, blah-blah-blah. Fantastic if you like 99.999% movies and nearly 0% music! I had one, tweeked it, did the 'auto setup', never sounded good with music. Used high end spkr's. Just passable in my opinion. Been an audiophile for 25+ yrs and my ears are perfect! Just saw my doctor and he told me so. Heard many systems at most price ranges and let me tell you...the Yamaha does not suit a music lovers bill. But...if you were to buy a 2500 or 2600 and use it as a pre/pro with a seperate power amp then you would have a sweet setup. The stock Yamaha's amps just don't produce very good music overall. Fantastic movie recv'r many will agree. I don't want to sound like I'm bashing the Yamaha it is just that you can get better sound from music and movies that sound just as good from competitors. How much processing do you want to be able to perform? A thousand dollars gives you quite a bit of choices especially if you buy a new, yr. old model like a 2805, 3805, or even a 3803. A VERY musical and equally good sounding recv'r is the Boston/Sherwood which lists $2999! It can be had new for a grand! How do I know? I'm the proud owner of one! Shop around. You have set a budget, determine needs/features, go listen and find dealer willing to let you 'test ride' the unit prior to plopping down your plastic.
