Long time 2 channel guy but need help with HT

Been around my two channel stuff for a long time. Have a high end system there and need help redoing my HT set up. My current set up is as follows
Onkyo 850 Rec
PS3 for media/transport
Klipsch RF82/62 center and Martin Logan Grotto sub.

Sound is OK and have had trouble with proper set up the last few years and just want to up grade I guess. Looking at the following.

Yamaha RXA-1020 Rec
Oppo BDP-103 bd Player
This will be added to my current speakers.

My question is this. With the high end Oppo BD player and a high end receiver, which component actually controls the picture quality... Am I correct as the Oppo will control the picture as it will run straight through the receiver to the tv and the Receiver is what controls the sound with its DAC?
I sound stupid but just couldn't find the correct article to explain it to me.
If this is the case, why purchase the high end Receivers?
I am a bit lost.

For video, many receivers these days allow you to choose whether or not the receiver reprocesses the signal from the player or just passes the signal through.

For audio via HDMI, I believe it is similar - you can have the player decoding and sending a decoded signal that requires less processing by the receiver or a bitstream for the receiver's DACs to decode.

Pretty much what you would be looking for in a higher model receiver are better amps and more features.

Just to add to j_garia's input;
I have the 103. It has two HDMI outputs and allows you to use out 1 as the video only to a projector or TV directly as this out has the best video processor.
Then, you can use out 2 for the audio to the receiver HDMI in. If you do this, you need to set up that HDMI in on the receiver so it is audio only and no video out otherwise the receiver bill look for an HDMI connected vide, not finding it will not do anything, no audio.
I had to redo my receiver assignments and setups.
The player is great, fast, wireless updates if the location has enough signal strength, or direcly wired.

Yes, forgot about the player itself, since it has dual outputs. This would also come in handy for a receiver that does not support 3D and a display that does.

Yes, that is an important consideration which I didn't even think about as I don't have 3D and not sure about its future in my home.;):D But, the player is great so far, especially when discs contain trailers as a box shown in the upper left corner of screen counts down so you can make a number of skips without worry you jumped into the movie.:D

You have $500 BR Player and that's your favorite feature? :p

Genius having 2 outputs.. I wouldn't have thought that it would be able to output of both at the same time.
