Long-term Project: 5.1 set-up

Hello everyone,

I'm (obviously) a first time poster here, so my apologies for the potentially ad naseum noobie questions. I'll be as precise as I can with my limited knowledge.

I am a musician by profession, and have a highly refined set of ears. Until recently, I had never experienced really high quality audio before, and am hooked! It is now a new obsession of mine, and I'd really like to get a decent audio foundation to work with, and potentially add to.

I know some of the basics of constructing a 5.1 set-up, but would like some help from experienced audiophiles to get the ball rolling. I have a few questions, and I'll list them as clearly as possible:

1. After digging around for quite a while on my local Craigslist, I found someone selling a pair of JBL L830's for $200, excellent condition. After looking at a copious number of reviews, I've found that the JBL L830's are exceptionally good bookshelf speakers for that price range (can be bought new for ~$350). Does anyone have experience with these? I was drawn to the claims that the mid-upper range was very clear and responsive, with a reasonably good bottom end.

2. In addition to these speakers, I'm looking for a decent amp. The reviews on the JBL's claimed that even the cheapest amp will make the L830's sing like angels. If I invest in an amp that can drive 4 speakers and a sub (once my 5.1 set-up is completed), will it overpower just these two bookshelf speakers? I don't want to blow them out accidentally.

3. What are your guys' opinions on mix and matching speaker/receiver/amp brands? I have encountered some top notch B&W floor speakers, and if I can find a pair of them, I'd love to make those the focus of my set-up and set up the JBL's on the sides. Would this potentially sound as amazing as my imagination would lead me to believe?

4. What are your opinions on center channel speakers vs. a sub? Or can I have both a center channel speaker AND a sub in addition to 4 speakers? I believe the new Pioneer 5.1 system that everyone is raving about has both a center channel and sub.

5. Speaking of subs - there is a B&W ASW300 on Craigslist as well, working condition. There are a lot of positive reviews for this sub, and I was wondering if I should snap it up.

Sorry for a slew of questions - thanks in advance for any help!

**EDIT**

6. In addition to the B&W ASW300 sub, the same seller is offering a single (working condition!) B&W VM1 speaker for next to nothing. According to B&W, this serves VERY well as a center channel speaker if laid horizontally. This falls under the same question as mixing/matching brands. If I could have 3 quality speakers in my possession already, I'd be off to a great start.

7. There is also the option of getting a 7.1 channel receiver - a seller on Craigslist is selling a Yamaha RX-V2095 7.1 for $200, purchased for $1700 new. Granted, this is kind of an old school rig; will it support these newer speakers? It is a 550 watt receiver - would I need an additional amp if I bought this receiver?

WOW, OK first that receiver for $200 has no hdmi inputs if I remember correctly, and there are a few decent avrs that are up to date for that price range...

Next, how about you give us some room dimensions and a budget and let us put together a system for you to try, also tell us what you plan to do with it, 50% music 50% movies, games, sports, ect....

Finally, you want a 5.1 most likely, thats front left, front right, center {them first 3 much be matching set for timber, you can not just choose a center and put it with any other fronts, they have to match, remember that front sound stage has to be same brand and series}, surround left, surround right, and a subwoofer {which is going to be self powered with an internal amplifier and will not need to be powered by an amp}....

good luck, let us know what you want and welcome to the forum...

ONe more thing in responce to the jbls, they are a 3 way studio speaker and I dont belive they make a matching center channel so you would need to buy a single bookshelf and use it as a center... I would stay away from them....

Thanks for the reply.

Forgot about budget. I'm working with around $1,000-1,500. I am a rabid bargain hunter, however, and if I can dig around on sites like Craigslist and Ebay and put together a quality system for cheap, I'll be doing that.

Alright, let's see here:

-My room is about 15 feet by 25 feet.
-I'd be primarily using this set-up for music (90%+), occasional movie watching and just general internet browsing.
-As mentioned, I will be connecting this to my computer and running FLAC files (recently came into possession of 7TB of FLAC from a friend)

In response to sides matching center; that makes sense, and I'll take that into consideration. About the JBL's, though - if I use them as my rear speakers, would they be alright?

Thanks for your in-depth help!

You want some nice speakers for music and HT - and a good deal
Then Focal
Accessories4less: High End Audio at Low End Prices!

You can use JBL as surrounds, or put the money towards a sub.

I can think of better speakers for surrounds than the jbls... But go take a listen to them maybe you fall in love...

To me they sound a little strong on the high end and fatiguing for long listening, but I like warm accurate speakers {affordable}...

OK with that budget, I can only tell you what I would buy, I also like getting the most for my money, but tend to stay awa from used, its a hassle and a gamble, plus its used, someone else has gotten their use out of them and now you are getting sloppy seconds, lol, their are definitly exceptions of course, but keep in mind speakers dont last for ever, and with theater systems, some people may play them 24 hours a day, and that can make a speakers lifespan really sort in terms of day counts... but anyway, with $1500 and your room, I say...

$249 DENON AVR-1613 5.1ch Networking Receiver w/AirPlay 3D ready | Accessories4less

2- subs -$362 STF-2 Subwoofer

$240 center WHARFEDALE DIAMOND 10 CS CENTER SPEAKER (CHERRY) **DEMO** at Music Direct

$280 fronts WHARFEDALE DIAMOND 10.1 CHERRY **DEMO** at Music Direct

surrounds- $35 Dayton Audio B652 6-1/2" 2-Way Bookshelf Speaker Pair 300-652

Thats comes to a little over $1500, the dual subs, and wd bookshelfs will rock with any type of music.... and with movies it will be just as impressive... If you are not a fan of wharfedale diamonds, ascend acoustics cbm170s are around the same price...

Thanks for all of the links, you guys - very helpful.

I have a receiver question, that I'll also be posting in that portion of the forum:

Marantz SR 96 seems to get across the board good reviews for music - any receiver opinions?

@ImcLoud

Thank you very much for all your input - I'll make a few calls to my local stores and see if I can't go in and listen to a few set-ups with the Wharfedale's.

I'm still interested in the JBL's, as I am a big fan of super crisp, intense audio for some types of music, but for my classical/symphonic listening, my tastes are similar to yours (warm with accurate timbres).

The guy selling the JBL's emailed me back and is perfectly willing to have a decent length listening session with me, so I'll get some time in front of them.

Again, thanks for the very useful links and informed advice! If you don't mind, I'll keep posting questions in this thread when they arise, and will update with pics :D
