Logitech Z5500 sub placement and adjusting sound with EQ

Hi, i have had the Z5500 for some time now, i love it, the sound quality is excellent, speakers go loud enough but its the sub, i just cant find the right place, some places i only get a little amount of bass, some places i hardly hear it, the last place i had it was in the corner but diagonal so the side firing port was not directly facing the wall, so far this place gave me the best amount of bass, i moved it due to the fact i needed to place my server there, so now its almost in the front middle of the room but inbetween 2 tests, there is no space inbetween the 2 desks and the sub, so i turned the sub on its side so the port is firing up. So were is the best place to place my sub? i just cant find anywere, i suppose its ok for when i am at my desk, but i also like to watch movies on my pc, and for that i go sit on my bed and then i am at the back of the room, so the sub is almost directly facing me, so i would like to have it placed in a place were i get the best bass for my listning position at my desk (sub is at the right of me) and at my bed (sub is directly in front of me)

I will draw a diagram to show you how my bedroom is layed out:
(sorry for the messy sketch, just getting used to my graphics tablet)

Also, i have seen some posts on various forums and some reviews that indicate the bass is a little muddy and boomy, i have an X-FI Fatal1ty sound card, what should my EQ be set to?

I have the same system, except that I don't use a PC. I found that the bass was muddy only when it was against a flat wall with no corners. I had it sitting behind an entertainment center in my old house and it cut down on the boomy bass, but left the quality bass (since that sub puts out enough bass that dampening it doesn't hurt it much). I would try to put it in the corner, but since it is tied to that control-box thing you can't put it too far away from the computer.

I cant put it in a corner anymore as there is no corners for it to go, i can make space for it in a corner, but dont want to put it in that corner as its on the side thats right against the neighbours bedroom. At the moment i now have the sub at the left side of the room but not in corner as server is there, it's about a meter down the wall from the server (see sketch), also i have the front of the sub facing wall, seems to give slight better bass, but i still am not satisfied with the position, what would the sub be ike been placed under a bed?, would the bass be alot louder?

when i had it in a corner, i still felt there was muddy bass, thats why i would like to maybe adjust the EQ, but dont know the best settings for the EQ.

got some more questions, how do i take the front grill of the subwoofer off? and also, should it be possible to turn the volume up to 20bars and have the subwoofer on full too, or would this be pushing the system too hard as i am wondering weather my system may be faulty, as i have the sub on full, and in some songs i turn the volume up to 13 or 14 and start hearing clicking which apparently is the sound of the sub bottoming out due to been pushed too hard, i find this happens alot.

Have you ever turned the sub up too loud and heard clicking?

Put it as close to a corner as you can get. Having the sub in the corner probly isn't the best place, because it plays quite high, so it will be easy to localize. Try a little out from the corner. This should help clam down the muddiness, and still give you bass.

got it as far as posible to the corner, cant have it any further because the hard drive in the server is actually in one of the cd-rom bays, so i cant have it any closer or the hard drive gets it.

What about the adjusting the Equilizer? how should i adjust that, what should i have it set at?

It would depend on the EQ. Rememeber, anythng above 150Hz isn't going to help the bass response.

Ah ok

what about the front grill on the subwoofer too, i have tried putting a screwdriver down the gap inbetween the grill and the main box, and it wont budge, maybe its bolted from the inside? there must be a way to get the grill off, you have any ideas?

You can break it, but I don't see the point of taking it off. It isn't affecting the sound.

I know it aint effecting the sound, just want a clear view of the cone, looks cool when the sub's on full.

Dont take it off, it will break it.

I know from experience, we used them for a party once, and this idiot kid got a wrapper sucked into the port, had to take it off to get it out.

So what happened when he took the front grill off?

I have seen loads of pics of the Z5500 with no grill in Z560, Z680, and a Z680 with a diffo sub in it.

If you dont mind me asking, was the Z5500 good for the party, did it give out enough bass?

The thing about the port has got me worried now, what if a fly goes into it?

I wouldnt worry about things getting sucked into the port, it happened again, we found a simple solution, play the song Blood Rave. And it will make its way up the port, you should then be able to stick your hand in, or in out case, some duct tape attached to a stick, and pull it out.

And yes, they are good for parties, they get so damn loud its insane.

Then again, me and my friends sound system for parties is this, combining our equipment.

My freind: Z5500, Z680's
Me: Pioneer VSX-815, Pyle amp, 4 2 way PA speakers.

Anyways, we pull around a kilowatt each time we fire it all up.

A kilowatt thats 1000W RMS right?, man thats insane, i bet werever you have your partys the neighbours complain :p

Would you reccommend buying another set of z5500's and using both of them for the same computer? or maybe buying the Z680?.

Do both the logitech speaker systems beat that Pioneer thing you've got?

Your z5500 will get plenty loud.

I cant really say if my pioneer receiver is better or not, becuase I've never owned and nice quality speakers with it.

But I could probly speculate that this pioneer paired with some nice polk or something would sound a heck of alot better.

You can always take the amp off if you need access to the port. The 5500 has a screw on grill I believe. The 2200, 680, 560 are different.

I find that the Z5500 is better for like ummm high and low continous bass, cant explain what i mean, well the Z5500 is better for any bass exept punchy thumping bass.

Do you think that i would get any louder bass from the Z5500 sub if i put the sub in a bigger box?

I am thinking about getting a Power Acoustik 12" 700W rms car sub, getting an amp for it, making the box, i bet that would give out 10 times more bass than a z5500, if i did get one of those 12" subs, i would be getting another one after, and maybe connect them to the computer somehow, so use the subs for bass obviously and then the z5500 for normal, maybe just turn the sub tottally down on the z5500.

Those subs are extremely crappy. Keep your logitech system in ONE PIECE.

And please, don't think aloud. Keep the posts in this thread relative to the original topic. We can't answer every hypothetical question you have.
