Second one. The x-over pulls off the signal it needs for the sub, and the high pass sends the amplified signal on to the mains. This is how all powered subs/amps that use high level in/out work (at least I've never seen one that didn't). Make sure you check what the highpass is fixed at, as they are all fixed outputs, meaning adjusting the sub's x-over adjusts only the sub, not the high pass output. Often, the highpass is quite high, as high as 120-150Hz, which is usually too high for most speakers.
