Anyone heard of the Liteon 5045 DVD recorder/HDD recorder? It's got 160 gig hard drive, five recording modes, HDD to DVD backup and vice versa, time shifting, pausing live TV, playback while recording, the whole schmear. It can record onto a DVD+R/RW, onto a DVD-R/RW, onto a CD-R/RW as a VCD or SVCD, or as audio tracks. It's got a DV Link as well.

The guy who's trying to sell it tells me he hasn't even opened the box, so it's in great condition. He says it retailed for $300 U.S., and wants me to suggest a fair offer.

Has anyone heard of this player? Is it any good, or at least worth buying, and if so, how much do you think I oughtta offer him?

cheers,

LiteOn makes very good dvd burners for computers. I'm not really familiar with their standalone burners. If they're as good as their computer burners, I say go for it.
I'd offer $200, and haggle from there, if it's brand new, as stated. If it's new, chances are he's not gonna GIVE it to you..............
Good luck! Let us know what happens?

Thanks guys! I read reviews, both on the page you suggested, brian, and on a few others as well. The price of $274 U.S. seems pretty good, considering the 160 gig hard drive. And I'm sure I can talk this seller down to maybe two-thirds of that. But I've been reading about too many problems with this unit: washed out colours, mono output that should be stereo, loss of all recorded problems when flashing firmware. There are tons more problems, so I think I'm gonna pass on this unit. But thanks so much, JVC and brian.

But who knows, if he's desperate to get rid of the thing, I might take it if the price is really good . . .

cheers,
