My house was recently struck by lighting...I have two Sony SAT HD300 revrs that were sapped...the power was off and the units had both been plugged into surge protectors..however the power surge ran directly through the antenna coaxial..both units were zapped and won't now establish connection with the satelites..I have sent them back to Sony for repair..but am looking for solutions for future sake..is there a quality protector for my equipment I can use???

Unless you have around $1500+ laying around, there is no units out there that can take a direct hit for under that much. Surge protectors will not protect against a direct hit and even sub $1000 lighting arrestors wont.
Against a direct hit, unplugging it is the only 100% sure way, electrical and cable connections!

I have a plate with jacks (that are all grounded) for my antennas and cables that has a bunch of jacks on it so I can just screw the cables onto the plate.

The problem is, and has been, not doing it, or not being here to do it.

But even when I did do it, it still can happen.

When I lost my UPS, not too long ago, it came in through the phone line, blew up the UPS, but the PC connected to the UPS just lost the modem, and still worked fine otherwise.

My friend has some kind of fancy surge protector built into his house. It has a couple of LED readouts on it showing line volts, last surge voltage (scary sometimes!), current draw, and lowest and highest line voltage over a certain period. The thing makes some insane noises. Normally, it makes a fairly loud hum, but when it's being hit, it growls and whines. I'm not sure how it works, as there are bags of nails inside it! Yes nails. Finishing nails to be precise.

It works great though, his lights almost never flicker or blink like mine do..and he hasn't had anything just die in a long long time.
