I have a theater room that is 16.5’ wide and 33’ long. I have a projector screen that is 120” on the 16.5’ wall and my seating is about 12’ back from the screen. Can somebody give me an idea of what type of lighting I can place along the side walls that will illuminate the room without casting much light in the direction of the screen? My toddler son likes to play in the empty area between our seats and the screen. The picture looks fine if I have the ceiling lights in the back of the room on and leave the ceiling lights off over the area where he plays…however, it leaves him playing in an area that is lowly lit (it isn’t dark, just not light enough for my wife to think it is ok). So, I was hoping I could just get some side lights that illuminate this part of the room without casting too much light directly on the screen. In the meantime I just turn on the ceiling light over the area where he plays and the screen still looks ok for daylight scenes but it is horrible for any dark scenes.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks.

You can use any light you would like as long as it is a directional light. Basically, you want to put a 'spotlight' on the floor to help you kid to be able to see while he plays.

In my home, I have recessed lights over the fireplace which are on a separate dimmer. These are really nice when the kids want to play in the room as they can play over by the fireplace and see, without much impact on the screen.

But, the key is getting lighting which is directional. That includes floor lamps, hanging lights, recessed lights, etc. The choice is yours, the directionality really isn't.

Is there a good place that I should be looking to make a purchase from? Or does anyplace like Home Depot have this type of lighting?

I have a mix in my HT - I have recessed cans in the ceiling (2 zones - front and back) and then sconces on the side walls and back wall. All are on dimmers so I can adjust the lighting depending on what I am doing. Attached picture should help you understand my setup.
