There are reports that LG Electronics plans to launch their 55" OLED TV in May during the Cannes film festival. The TV will cost 9 million Won - or about $7,900 (this is consistant with DisplaySearch's estimates). LGE originally planned to launch it during the London Olympics in July, but the company wants to be the first out with an OLED TV and so accelerated the production schedule. The company will make a decision on further OLED investment in July, after judging the first consumer reactions.
LG's 55" 55EM9600 is using a WOLED-CF design on an Oxide-TFT backplane. The panel is only 4mm thick, and the whole TV weighs just 7.5Kg. LG Display can currently make around 48,000 monthly 55" panels in their pilot 8.5-Gen production line.

Can't wait to see one of these fancy new oled displays once they hit the stores. Hopefully it won't take too long before the price starts to drop on oled sets.

$7900 is a pretty encouraging starting point, actually. Way out of my reach now, but by the time I'm on the market for a TV again...

With a price that high the LG needs to look as good, or better than the VT series Panasonics, the 8000 Series Samsungs, and the Elite LCD. If it is not better looking or has some other flaws with it (beyond being an LG) then it has no hope at all in gaining sales.

At that price point, I can see a lot of 'high end' people going for it.

Even moreso if the display is of the same image quality that the Kuro displays were at when it comes to overall quality and black level and shadow detail. Just a couple of months and hopefully we will get in the street reports of actual performance quality.

I wonder if anyone had a chance to compare VT30 vs VT50...
I understand VT50 no longer uses infinity black 2, but brand new type exclusive to vt series
